F*cking awning - designed to keep divorce lawyers happy. We had caravans when kids were little, mainly for short breaks as we still had the annual holiday to the sun.. Even for that though we had to have the biggest twin axle caravan ever and of course a full size awning for it... And then you had to hope it was dry to take the sod down as trying to dry an awning that was about 11m long from one end of cord to other was not easy at home - especially when the caravan it was attached to was stored in a compound with about 2 feet of space either side....

I was so disappointed when the travelling community nicked it.....

We go camping with a group of friends every year - there's loads of really nice campsites. Get away from it all, proper peace and quiet. Barefoot living; open air cooking; let the kids run wild; gazebos and fairy lights; bikes/canoes/walks; bevvies, toasted marshmallows and some decent music around the camp fire every night. As long as the showers have hot water the rest of the facilities are irrelevant - even pit toilets don't smell if they're used properly.

Very cool, I like to set up camps in all sorts of remote places from cities in the United States. In my free time, of course. And I don't have a lot of it (but it doesn't matter). The main thing is that I do it whenever I can. It is also worth noting that it is very important to choose the right lighting when creating a camp. Your life may depend on it. I will tell you a story from my life. One day we set up camp near Las Vegas. It was fun, we went to bed. Then when we woke up, we found that some wild dog was eating our food. It's still shit and not a patch on a proper holiday. The kids enjoyed it and when it wasn't raining it was nice to be outside but it's still more of a chore than a holiday.

Just come back from a weekend camping with 11 other school families. Brilliant fun.

Also spent two weeks around north of England in the camper van in August, also great fun.

That said, I also like a decent hotel, but actually, at the moment, they don't really work for us, as you need to be back in the room by 9, when the youngest is getting tired and irritable.

I've just re read my calm and reasoned post above and decided not to put a towbar on the Audi and buy a Knaus Sport and Fun after all......

I'll stick to nice hotels, as I dont have irritable kids who need to go to bed - although we do have lots of TV channels, room service, rooms with lounge areas as well as a bed, interconnecting rooms etc etc.... and of course some have fabulous views...

I enjoy a night or two camping if the weather is nice. Not sure I'd want to do any longer. I prefer a quiet site in glorious surroundings with minimal facilities, lots of space, choose your own spot and a pub within 20mins walk.
Recently enjoyed a night in the lakes and had a couple of one night wild camps up in t'hills so far this year.
