N55 engine replacement -
Hi all,
I'm buying a 2013 335i xdrive sedan with the PPK and M package I brought the car at the inspection and a mechanic heard knocking at high rpm so BMW decided to finally change the engine. it's back order so they need to order a new one, the cost is around 24k US, which I won't pay but I been told they won't change the turbo, saying it's okay. I was wondering if they would put a short or long block? Thank you |

The N55 that they are taking out, will be replaced with another new N55.

He's referring to whether they will just replace the lower end below the cylinder head (short block), or block and head entirely (long block).
I'm not a dealer or BMW employee but I've only ever read about them putting in long blocks. The dealer probably doesn't want any business in rebuilding an engine, and it's probably shed metal all over the head possibly ruining more stuff, anyway. We've had an Audi that had a new short block put in, but only because the head gasket or ring failed. Not as catastrophic as a failure as a bearing sending metal everywhere.

Yikes, that's still a lot of money out of pocket in my opinion.

They will replace the short-engine.
I had the same question. Why would they bother putting a short-engine in but that is what BMW HQ approved. I wager your part will be sourced from Lafayette, Louisiana. |

I would be shocked if they don't replace the long block. BMW techs don't know how to install a head and sure don't want the liability. 24k better pay for a long block.
