2013 328i xDrive F30 N20 - Fuel Injector leaking on exterior?

Hey y’all,

Working through diagnosing a problem causing a drivetrain malfunction warning that is sporadic. When I drive moderately, I never experience an issue… however when getting into higher revs (4-5k) to pass a car on the highway, I receive a Drivetrain Malfunction the next time the car is turned on. I only received a CEL once, it was for a cylinder 1 misfire.

My first thought was to replace coils and plugs. When I removed all plastic parts to get to the plugs, I noticed a smell of fuel and moisture on my cylinder 1 injector. All of the other 3 injectors where bone dry. Please see the two photos comparing cylinder 1 and 2 injectors below.

Is this something that can be fixed DIY by replacing an O-ring or seal, or should I replace the injector all together? Is there something else I should be considering that may be causing the problem?

I truly appreciate your help in advance!

Tony

Going to post updates here in case helpful for anyone diagnosing similar issue in the future.

As I was changing coils and spark plugs, I noticed a bit of dried oil in the cylinder 2 chamber as pictured below (along with dry cylinder 1 for comparison). I wonder if this is an issue with how the spark plug is seated, or debris.

The drivetrain malfunction did not appear for a few days, until I took a longer trip. It is now coming on exactly every other time I start the car, or after driving the car for more than an hour.

Just ordered an eNet cable and will diagnose with ISTA+ tomorrow.

For anyone interested, I was able to resolve my intermittent drivetrain malfunction by adjusting the wastegate actuator adjustment nut.

Here is the video that helped out:

I used ISTA to determine the position was out of range.

Cheers!
