Temperature gauge on instrument cluster

I feel like I am having a crash course lately for car mechanics. Today I changed my stage 1 MHD tune to use a coolant target of “sport”. I checked the sport cooling mode for the intercooler as well. On my drive home the temp needle for the gauge on the cluster never made it past the quarter mark - where I’m used to seeing it make it somewhere between quarter and half. I turned on the monitoring on the MHD app and it was reading 190-200 ish. For a 340i what is a temp that is considered “fully warmed”? I never realized that the quarter mark is roughly 190-200… I always waited to push the car till the temp gauge was well past the quarter mark. Another question - should I change the cooling modes come cooler weather or are those cooling modes only “engaged” when the engine temps hit a certain status?

My understanding is that sport cooling is only sensible if:
- You are driving in very hot climate (to make sure it cools down the engine quicker after loading it)
- You track race the car, for obvious reasons...

I am not tuned yet, but wouldn't enable that option unless either of the 2 criteria above is fulfilled.

Irrespective of the engine, the optimal, working temperature of engine oil is > 60 deg. Celsius.

If your oil doesn't get over 215-220F then it won't burn off residual water. Not a big deal to be under unless you never get over that. If you don't get over it then you need to change your oil more often, every 2-3000k miles.

The intercooler sport cooling option in MHD helps reducing IATs so it's a good option whether it's summer or winter.

According to a recent video here, the IAT reduction is negligible. It only helps cool down quicker postfactum.

In reality only useful if you live in really hot climate country OR you track the car.

Others have mentioned it in a roundabout way, but kevmk81 are you aware that the temp gauge in the dash is oil temp, and not coolant temp like most other cars?

Cool. I didn't know either when I bought mine. It's better than coolant, as it's a better gauge indicating when you can let 'er rip.

Here's the quote from MHD themselves.

Everybody understands it's meaning differently perhaps

simply need to log before and after to see . people flash it and assume it's better but i never run it. it also lowers engine temp targets below operating temp whenever it's under high load, so I'm not a fan of that.

Wonder why the temp gauge in the cluster shows the universal symbol for Oil. Gentlemen, please take a couple of minutes to familiarize yourselves with your cars display systems. German engineering thought processes are somewhat different then ours ( in US).

I don't know enough abt BM3.

But MHD has 2 cooling options, one for the intercooler and one for the engine as shown in the attached screenshot.
The one for the engine has 3 choices: OEM - Sport - Track

BM3 only has 3 settings for "max cool". OEM, ON, Original. Not sure what "original" means, and I'm assuming "ON" is the MHD 'track' setting.

OEM = no cooling
On = Sport cooling
Original = whatever is in the tune (it can be modified in custom maps)
