Catted downpipe worth it?

I have the MPE on my 328 and wondering if a catted downpipe is worth it? I have the Dinan S1 tune. Change the feel of the car much? Is it really that much louder than MPE?

Exhaust will get louder and you will get performance gain but its less than if you would got with catless.... all you really doing is getting a highflow cat thats all.

Is there any risk of error codes or CEL with an aftermarket DP?

What would be the main differences between HFC and Catless?

With a HFC DP there wont be any codes, but with catless DP there will be error code but i was told that JB4 can bypass that. Since cats are very restrictive getting a HFC or no cat(catless DP) will free up the flow in the exhaust. I'm not sure how it benefits the N26 tho since there is secondary cat.

I'd recommend passing on the JB4 since it causes a lot of blown engines and instead getting bm3

It's not that you shouldn't get JB4, but don't get JB4 if you're not going to take care of it. Watch the logs, use the right map with the right mods, etc. People only blew their engines because they were dumb and ran lean on their car without watching it. That being said, I would go BM3 first. You get much more out of the price and more things to tune.

Power gains are the same on catted vs catless with stock turbo

Catless sounds more aggressive but smells, catted does not smell.

If you want the power, with no fuel smell and a slight upgrade in exhaust tone catted is the way to go

Catted d/p really brings out the exhuast sound. It is loud from outside, and audible in the cabin (thanks to the good insulation).

Cold start is really loud though + the smell always remind me that catless is not the way.

Mike is pretty much on point with saying that the real diff with catless vs catted really boils down to the smell. Using myself with my '14 F30, I use Fabspeeds hi flow DP which consists of a 200 HJS race cat (if I'm not mistaken). They have stated that it isn't supposed to throw a CEL but I have gotten a CEL on occasions depending on how hard I'm pushing the car I've noticed seems to affect it. I do have ER's largest intercooler along with their charge pipe so I'm not exactly "stock" minus the fact that I'm missing the tune that I'll soon be going after.

In terms of feeling, it can be easily said that a DP is the one mod that you can bolt on that will bring the most noticeable gains and the butt dyno doesn't lie. The car pulls much better in the mid range than it did prior to putting it on. I however can't pit it against the MPE axle back because I opted to get this instead of the Remus and others because I knew slapping in the DP would make it much louder and made the right choice because the worst drone I ever get is when I let the tranny sit in D, when manually shifting I can avoid letting it sit in a high gear in a low RPM that will cause the possible droning.

My dealer is mod friendly but to avoid the CEL I decided to get the Bimmerlink app along with a ODB 2 dongle that allows me to read and clear errors as well so it makes it convenient to not have to worry if my Fabspeed DP decides to shaft me and throw up the CEL before going in.

One thing I can say though is how you drive and the quality of the high flow cats inside of the catted DP matters per brand as I've read some people have gotten CELs even when the were guaranteed not to but I love my Fabspeed DP and I'm going BM3 soon so not much of an issue for me

Just be aware that the virginia state police may enforce cats:
Quote:
INSPECT AIR POLLUTION CONTROL SYSTEM OF 1973 AND SUBSEQUENT MODELS FOR:
Installation.
No parts removed, disconnected or rendered inoperable.
(NOTE: This includes the catalytic converter and the fuel tank filler pipe.)
So I wouldn't recommend going catless to the Op

Regarding a dinan S1 with catted, the tune won't factor in the less restrictive cat so you won't be able to benefit from its full potential but you may feel a very slight difference.

Mikes Right but if you plan on getting your car tuned upping the boost then catted vs Catless is a huge difference in power

Bump, I’m interested to know this!

I did a quick search and found this one... although the website doesn’t note whether or not the high flow cat will throw a code or not. It’s a 200 cell cat compared to the stock 400, not sure if it’d throw a code or not

Fabspeed uses HJS cats that guarantee no CEL light

Wagner Tuning use same level Euro 6 cats that do a very good job suppressing the code.

Or... is catless with a known to work O2 sensor spacer the best way to go?

Any performance difference between HFC and catless aftermarket downpipes?

Sharing feedback from HJS :
They do not carry DP for 320i, both N20 and B48. But local agent/distributor is legal to import the main cat. and further processing to make DP and sell them under the name of HJS.
