There are ways to update it, but I wouldn't have those details. I doubt its worth all the costs and efforts.

It's in your settings.

On a side note, I wouldn't pay for apple CarPlay unless it already came with the car. I tried it for a month and turned it off in both my bimmers.

Glad I'm not the only one who doesn't like Carplay.

Wouldn't be AS bad if they didn't insist on it taking over the ENTIRE multimedia system and just let you use the audio player component on it's own for example in a sub-menu, but replacing EVERYTHING is just not the one for me.

But you can easily toggle back and forth from idrive and car play.

Best of both worlds.

Anyone know if there is a better option than paying $600+ for Carplay MMI if I really just want to display Waze on the screen?
Would it have to be that SmartView type phone mirroring?

Apparently you can do some kind of mirroring on Android.

I will say this though: I did not like it on the screen.

Whenever you have to use iDrive for any other function, you have to leave the waze screen. You have to go to the main menu, then scroll all the way to the left to get to carplay. After awhile it become a pain just to get back to waze.

A few things to note:

1) You cannot assign a preset to waze, otherwise it wouldn't be a big deal to return to the app.

2) I haven't found a way to assign a preset to CarPlay either. You have to go to the main menu.

3) Pressing the Map button near the iDrive dial conveniently brings you to the carplay map, but it's Apple's Map app, not Waze.

4) Using your phone will make the waze app on Carplay disappear. ie if you pick up your phone and use it for anything other than what is on the iDrive screen, Carplay will close whatever app is running, like waze, and go to either the main menu or the app's carplay screen. When you are done, you have to navigate back to the waze screen.

5) The turn by turn isn't available on carplay. My phone will display the turn by turn, but not the map. So the ideal setup is to have iDrive display the map with my phone mounted to view the turn by turn. It's actually not a bad setup this way, but if I have to mount my phone, I might as well have the waze map on it at all times so I can use the iDrive for other functions. Since carplay will not let me display the waze map on the phone while carplay is activated, I just turned the whole thing off.

Long story short, if you have your phone mounted, carplay is best turned off for waze users to maintain functionality of the iDrive.


Things I like about carplay:

1) dictating messages

2) Spotify works pretty well

3) Siri requests to play music automatically switches your audio to carplay. With carplay off, you have to switch iDrive to play from your phone.

Thanks for the feedback. Very hard to justify the cost then. I installed the Rennline F30 ExactFit Magnetic Phone Mount this weekend so I think I will stick to that for the time being.
