This is a great video. I had thought they had moved the timing chain to the front on this generation B58.

Great video, it's really interesting that they integrated the exhaust manifold into the head.

I was kinda disappointed he didn't show the clutch removal with that death puller machine. Then I realized what kind of world this is now.

On other cars, integrating the exhaust manifold has somewhat hindered performance of the aftermarket bolt on turbo. That integrated manifold sets the ceiling of performance. Where as the standard exhaust manifold can be redesigned to flow more.

wow that is some serious engine porn. Sure looks easy breaking down a motor that hasn't even been run in much....

I definitely learned a lot about the changing design of things like the exhaust manifold and also the radiator inside the intake as well as the way that the variable valve timing works to activate the intake cam.

these days with turbo cars... it seems manufacturers are making these sorts of design changes to limit aftermarket modifications from damaging the stock motor. Another example is factory charge pipes made of plastic or rubber that will fail before they hold high boost..

B58 represents a measurable improvement over N55. Having driven both, B58 is by far the preferred choice for me.

Great video!

Looking at the glass half full means you can easily bolt on an aftermarket turbo by making a smaller adapter instead of making a full manifold.

I thought this has valvetronic so the throttle body is at WOT at all times. I couldn't find my earlier post it is in a different thread, they should be merged.

B58 teardown video ~ any idea how close this is to the b58 found in the 2016-2019 340 https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1643084

Yes, but that still doesn't change the limitations from the presumably smaller and unmodifiable(new word) ports in the head.

Nothing to do with purposely hindering aftermarket....it's all for cost savings and using a module block design.

Where was I disagreeing instead of just pointing out the positives in this setup?

Also, 700hp 4 cylinder VWs don't seem to have an issue with this.

What is the power ceiling with the integrated manifold though? I bet it's way higher than most tuners target. Very high power builds might be able to just swap in a head from another B58 (B58B30M0) with a custom manifold.

I didn't say what the limits were, but it is a limitation compared to a standard head/manifold setup. You are all right though, because it will probably support plenty of HP for most people using this engine.
