iPod not working

NAWW dude dont use the YCable use a AUX cable its a lot better and it always works just plug it from the headphone port to the aux port

Sure, but with a Y cable you can view track info on your iDrive screen, search for tracks and control your iPod from the steering wheel no?

It doesn't charge that way though. Unless there's a 12v power adapter in the glovebox, but last I checked it doesn't. Can someone confirm or deny that?

Well in my E90 there one and bmw says there 4 of them so yes there is one in the F30 there a black button covering it just pull up on it

I have not seen retrofit kits yet.
There were ones for some E90, but its quite a lot of wiring that has to be done + the installation of the combox controller

Thats because the 6FL option was advertised as giving Ipod connectivity so teh cable was included with the option, but some dealers initially incorrectly didnt include the cable that was required.

On the F30 no claim is made for Ipod connectivity on the standard system, so no free cable.

A huge proportion of worldwide F30 drivers have probably never even used a Ipod, so a free cable would just be a waste. Those that use Ipods should consider the upgraded USB option

For US buyers, will the upgraded USB be split out from the BMW Assist option package? I don't need BMW Assist, but I would really like to have the upgraded USB/Bluetooth.

It's probably more expensive to manufacture, and they are cornering people into paying for more than what they want in order to make up for the cost.

So if you order Navigation, you're set? I do plan on getting Nav with my 328.

- 609 - Pro Nav
- 610 - HUD
- 6UH - Real Time Traffic Information
- 6WA - Instrument cluster with extended contents

Looks like what you need is:
- 6NF - "Smartphone Integration" or "Music Interface for Smartphones"

That only comes with BMW Apps (6NR) and you need both ZTP and BMW Assist (6NL) to get it.

Someone should send this trail to BMW so they can see what a mess they made of iPod integration! It really shouldn't be this confusing.

To be able to use the Apple USB cable the car needs to be fitted with a combox.

Now how does the car get a combox ?
Here are some of the ways

Option 6NK adds a combox (not available in the USA)
Option 6NL adds a combox
Option 609 (Pro Nav) adds a combox

Each combox is slightly different to work with its options, but each should add USB connectivity to Apple products

6NK and 6NL add bluetooth music connectivity aswell

6NF you mention is for smartphone connections, which adds a USB link via the phone cradle to the combox

Its not really confusing

The standard system gives you Ipod connectivity through the BMW Y Cable
If you want full Ipod connectivity and functions, get option 6NK or 6NL
If you want smart phone connectivity through the phone cradle get 6NF aswell

Pro Nav will also give you some extra Ipod connectivity, But will not give all functions like bluetooth music streaming without 6NK or 6NL.

Strange you still need a Y-cable ?
In the F11 the only thing you need is the standard white apple cable and it works perfectly.

if you order ZTP (Tech Pkg) in the USA you get the combox?

which means if you addd ZTP all you need is the white Apple USB cable?

+1. I consider myself a fairly intelligent guy, I know my cars pretty well and I poured over the literature before ordering my car, by which time I reckon I knew more than most of the sales reps at my local dealer. And I still missed this!

Given the number of members (i.e. folks who are nuts about their cars) who have queried this, I think BMW have got it wrong. I doubt very much whether average Jo public is going to understand his options and I am suspect that many buyers (as proved here) will be disappointed when they plug their iPod into the car using a std Apple USB cable and nothing happens.

Not everyone will be lucky enough to benefit from your exceptional knowledge E90Fleet (for which we are all most grateful), and as Darth Vadar said to Luke Skywalker, "it's too late for me" (my car has already been built).
