I've had mine coded for last year to start in eco Pro it's worth it for long journeys I do for economy, even kicks down well if you want to get out of sticky situations.

Fair enough, but I enjoy the responsiveness and performance in sport mode and find the car sluggish and dull in eco-pro. I didn’t buy the car for its eco-credentials, if I wanted that I’d have bought a Nissan Leaf Personally I feel the slightly higher consumption is a reasonable trade off for driving enjoyment and as I don’t cover many miles it’s not a big financial burden.

Each to their own. I coded mine out as default. Why? In eco pro I would net around 38 bonus miles to the tank on my 435d (cruise set to 50/70) and when I switched to comfort one day there were 24 bonus miles. Not bad I thought. Driving with a throttle that was dangerous as slow to respond... brakes that felt less effective... whatever else eco pro does versus driving in comfort where the response is there if required and the adaptive suspension felt better... I stopped playing the eco pro numbers game because my driving is sufficiently economical.

Eco pro mode is shite. I tried to see if it was better than comfort and made .5 mpg better over two identical trips of 65 miles. Good driving skills will improve your MPG, not the mode. I do try and look after my MPG on the way to and from work, but you can't worry too much with a 335d

Commute is 13 miles, a mix of roads, with a couple of very short dual-cabbageway sections, traffic moving reasonably freely so not too much stop-start stuff. The benchmark was my normal run, in sport mode and paying no particular attention to driving style or economy. I then did the same run yesterday in full eco-poo and driving like a granny, then today in comfort mode, being reasonably economical with the throttle, but otherwise much like day 1...... Benchmark in sport mode - ave speed 21.0mph, 36.1mpg Eco-poo granny mode - ave speed 20.3mph, 38.6mpg (+7.2%) Comfort mode - ave speed 21.1mph, 37.2mpg (+3%, presumably mostly down to stop-start) So if I drive very carefully, fail to keep up with the flow of traffic and make a general nuisance of myself, I save the princely sum of £77 a year on fuel (based on 7,000 miles & c. £1.30/litre). Wow. Be still my beating heart.... As I said before, ETTO (and I completely get that everyone's driving style/annual mileage is different), but for me personally Eco-Pro is an irrelevance - completely spoils the driving experience, doesn't exactly deliver stunning economy gains, and as others have observed can be borderline dangerous in some situations. |

Okay, I haven't yet picked up my car so I can't try anything for myself, but:
I fairly regularly do a run from Leeds to northern Scotland, 500 miles total. Leeds to Glasgow, 250 miles, is all motorway so ~80 mph, Glasgow to Inverness is single / dual but average speed cameras keep me to max 60 for ~130 miles, the rest is then single track with passing places so ~60. I used to do this in a Volvo and as far as Inverness it's in cruise all the way. In the Beemer I was thinking to put in Eco Poo and cruise for max efficiency but I've been seeing on here that cruise doesn't use the freewheel mode of Eco. So what's my best bet. Eco poo and cruise, Comfort and cruise or Eco and no cruise? I'm not that fussed about mpg but on that journey up the M6 and M74 I'm limited by camera vans on bridges anyway so why not try for the best I can? Once passed Inverness the stick will be going left

I always use cruise on the motorway set at 75mph or 50mph in the roadworks. Saves having to continually watch your speed as it is very easy for it to creep up to ticket speeds without noticing. Might not be the most economical method but my 330i did return over 53mpg on one motorway run in comfort mode and regularly hits high 40's. Around town is a different story when it is usually low 30's/high 20's

I think one of the key factors is the coast mode in Eco Pro. As far as I am aware that does not engage in Comfort and is one of the key reasons for considerably better economy if not on cruise control whilst in EcoPro.
Also comparisons with 330i's etc don't wash really because with a 335d we are talking a 4x4 x-drive and in reality most of us who bought a 335d over a 340i probably had one eye on economy anyway. (that being said, having seen the fantastic mpg's from the 340i drivers on motorway cruises I probably would have gone that way if I had my time again!) |

What they should have done is simple - have a tick box in comfort mode to enable coasting. That's the big gainer that eco-pro has. If you could have that with the sensible throttle control of comfort, I bet a half decent driver could match or, likely, better the full eco-pro result.

Yes exactly this. Protect the engine. Also to those of you that are complaining about throttle response at intersections... there’s a button to switch modes, lol. It’s not that hard to find either

Like others have mentioned, I drop the car into eco when it's cold. And mainly use comfort mode once warm. Sport and sport+ are fine, just get a bit tiresome after a while. If you forget you are in sport mode at a sharp corner you can make yourself look/feel a bit daft.

Also I suspect there's a reason it starts in comfort even when cold, because eco is probably less efficient for getting the engine up to operating temperature = potentially more damage to the engine. Same way warming the car up on idle for 15 minutes in the cold whilst you sit inside is bad for your engine. |
