MyBMW vs Connecteddrive
The app "my bmw" uses the same password as connected drive. For me it was a seamless transition. The app per se is not beholden to the connected drive services. You can buy connected drive services through the app should you choose to and assuming they are available for your vehicle. The app gives you a bit of info on the vehicle (depending on year and model) and provides links to dealers, finances (should you have a loan on the car), it provides warranty info, etc. Some features do depend on the vehicle. I have a 2016 and 2018 bmw and I can see info on both vehicles, but I only get detailed info on the 2018.

Go out to your car, turn it on. Open the app to get to your car then plug it in with the aple cable to the center console usb.
Then go to conenct3d apps on the idrive and choose connection assistant. It will then show connected and populate mileage and liters/ distance remaining. Whether after that it will stay updated IF you have active connected drive subscription or requires it to be plugged in to get new info I don’t yet know cause I never use it anymore though I still have a couple months left before I am sunsetted. I hadn’t bothered with the app since I got my new phone months ago but I jsut got mine to show following the above directions. Edit Next time I drive enough to make any difference I will try looking at it again.

I believe the above only applies to older ModelYears (pre LCI?).
Never had to connect my phone physically to the car to set up or take advantage of the app.

I get a "To refresh your vehicle's location you must be within 1.5km of the vehicle" when i try to locate the vehicle.
I have a 2014 f30. Is there a way to sort it so I can locate it from anywhere? |

You are correct. I have 2016 X1 my teen has decided is her vehicle and a 2018 f30. The 2018 hooks up remotely using "my bmw" and the 2016 has to be plugged into the car to get fuel and other info in the "my bmw" app. But both vehicles still show up in the app. |

I have to connect my LCI to iPhone via armrest USB to get the data to update on the My BMW app.
Which of the available third party apps do you find most useful? Anyway to add more apps? Clearly the system is capable of mirroring whats on the phone through a USB connection… too bad there isn't a basic third party nav app… was surprised to see Napster supported. Didn't realize that was still a thing! |

Then that's definitely the explanation. That's a limitation in the early models. Nothing you can do to change that.

Never found any use of Apple CarPlay (if anything - it is annoying as the audio always switches to CarPlay automatically!)
But that's indeed offtopic here.

I live in Vermont, so I rarely lose my parked car I think I can live without the app. I literally only wanted to compare what it said for gallons in tank vs. what the gauge says, since apparently that's the only place where you can see the quantity. You know the car has the info, thanks iDrive...

I agree that it is not necessary, but I like to use car play to play music, to see Apple Maps and Waze on my nav screen. I do like the many other features so I have grown to like apple car play. With my other vehicles not having apple car play, I realize it is still a luxury and that it is not essential. But at least for me I have a good use for it.

I wouldn’t expect it to since the hardware would be for UScarrier ATT and probably would not work with your local telecom.
