Amazon drop in air filter

I just came across this drop in filter on amazon for $15. It seems to get good reviews, although it only has 12 reviews.

Drop-in oiled filters make zero extra power and risk coating your MAF sensor, which will actually decrease performance.

Why not just spend $9 more to get an OE filter with zero chance of grenading your engine?

From the product description: "These filters do not require oil so it does not clog your maf sensor throwing a CEL."

An air filter can only have higher flow if the size of the pores in the filter material are larger. The larger the pores the larger the size of particles that can pass into the engine. That means if the claims of better airflow are true you're putting your engine at risk.

+1 on what Bill said.

I never liked the k&n style filters. Technically speaking, those types of filters are old technology. Manufacturers used to use oil coated , cotton media filters “back in the day;” up until late 1940s early 50’s I believe before paper filters were developed. The oil bath type air filters required more maintenance, were messey, and allowed oil to get sucked into the engine if too much was used. To me, those K&N style filters are a step backward in technology. That is my humble opinion.

I have a little over 500,000 miles on K&N style filters in my bmw's, track car and FI mustangs, most all of which I sell or trade at 200,000 miles. Never have I replaced one MAF that wasn't for performance reasons. I am currently running, and have for 15,000 miles, the amazon cotton filter. While I don't send my oil to blackstone every change, I have seen no difference in performance of my vehicle or oil. What I have seen, is not having to spend 25 bucks every time I change my oil cause folks on the internet said so. I have never once "oiled" a filter.

Buy it and dont look back.

I just ordered a new stock filter. I've run a K&N for probably 15,000 miles now, but I never noticed that it made a difference, good or bad, so why not stay with OEM for maximum dust and particle filtration? K&N claims 96%-99% dust filtration, Mahle (OEM filter supplier) claims 99.9%. That's my opinion.

Two things. If a magic air filter could improve engine performance without impacting durability BMW would use one. If a less expensive air filter worked as well as what BMW currently uses they'd switch suppliers. If you think that saving seven bucks on a filter is a big deal consider that buying at cost BMW would probably save three bucks per filter. Multiply that by two million cars produced per year and that's six million dollars.

The point of this thread was to post a cheaper alternative to the K&N drop in filters that many forum members use, not to have people argue about OEM filters vs. drop in filters.

One thing to consider is air flow, you want to make sure that this filter is improving air flow or else its pretty much useless.

We do offer Pipercross which is proven and still cheaper than K&N
