The same model here in Australia (rear wheel drive only) starts at $137,000!

Even with the exchange rate of Us$1 to AU$0.94 it's much much more expensive here.
At the Detroit auto show I was talking to an Aussie about y'all's (that's Texan) car prices and your minimum wage, which is, if I recall correctly, about $20/hr. There is a big push here in the U.S. to raise the minimum wage to $15 for jobs that are meant to be for teenagers, not adult family breadwinners. Anyway, no one wants to take the time and effort to look down the road to the future economic consequences of such a change.

Min wage is AU$17/hour, it's just that because our unemployment rate is so low no one will work for that so the average is $33/hour.

Whichever way you cut it, you've got the cheapest BMWs outside of Germany itself.

Nothing new here. Bunch of 335/435's on this board are over $60k which is M3 territory. And a loaded 328 is going to cost more than a base 335.

Nah, go out and build one of those. It's a whole new level of sticker shock.

An equally equipped M4 convert would be $99k. There is no free lunch.

I just got to $101K on a 650i vert without getting too crazy on options.

You must have not had a chance to look at it close up. The new model IS, not the old one, are more luxurious inside and out. In my opinion I even like the exterior better save for the predator face grill; however they are off their game in performance/handling and they are also quite a bit more expensive than a BMW for a comparable car. But people buy Lexus for luxury and quality not for a fun drivers car.

Does that mean that our cars are Mini's with BMW badges?

Just because Lexus is owned by Toyota does not mean that their cars are just dressed up Toyotas....unless you're looking at an ES350...that is literally just a upgraded Camry. Just like Mini and BMW share nothing in common...exception being the upcoming 2 Series Active Tourer.

The IS, GS, and LS line though all run off a RWD architecture not shared with Toyota.

The entire premise of this thread is absurd.

1) It uses the 435ix as the base then adds in options an ix buyer wouldn't likely buy because performance isn't their #1 objective or they would have stuck with the RWD (M4): 19" wheels, M Brakes.($1550)

Then a bunch of great but 100% luxury items are added, Driver Asst. Plus, Lighting, Active Cruise, Concierge, Leather Dash ($6200)

That's $7750 of unneeded options right there, and still the car is very well optioned and chock full if high tech and performance goodies. And the price is still before incentives and negotiating -- no one pays MSRP. Get rid of xDrive unless you live in a true winter-land, not some, two storms a year place like DC, and chop off another $2K before the wheeling and dealing.

If the prices is still too high there is ED. My next 435i M Sport will run me around $59K before tax for an almost loaded car. Not cheap, but not unreasonable compared to the A5 or E350 Verts. My only real quibble is that the HK radio isn't standard b/c the standard radio w/ top down is like listening for a mouse squeek in a subway station.

Literally this is just an observation. I am not hating on the car or its potential owners because of its price--if I wanted this car exactly this way, I'd pay for it! I'm just giving an example of how crazy these options can get.

Apparently you weren't paying very close attention when you lived here. There are more convertibles here than I ever saw in Texas and the reason is there's so much nice weather in the spring, summer, and fall you have months and months of top down driving weather. In Texas you're lucky if you get three good weeks in the spring and the fall. The rest of the time it's too blooming hot to drive top down. I'm constantly amazed how many 'verts I see in Chicago and how much they drive top down.
Agreed. Add the xDrive and you have the perfect car for snow country. As long as the outside temperature is 40 or above top down driving is quite doable. That was my experience with the 335i Convertible. Now with the 435i's cold weather package (new neck warmer, heated steering wheel, and heated seats), you could probably keep the top down to 35 F as long as there is no wind and the side windows are up.
