EGR cooler leaking
Hi guys, my f31 330d was in for a service today and to my disappointment they told me that the EGR Cooler is leaking. I googled the problem but no one seems to say where the leak comes from exactly. Has anyone got an idea where they leak from?

There is a pipe towards the front of the engine bay kind of slap bang in the middle. IIRC it will sit behind the rad but will be slightly lower down and a right bitch to see properly. It will be this pipe which will be leaking. Look for remnants of soot around and near it. Are you not covered under warranty? |

Common problem on the 6 cylinder Diesels. I have had mine changed, so even if out of warranty, I would have a word.
Touch wood, the new version seems to be just fine. |

Unfortunately it's 42 months old so out of BMW warranty, and they want £697 to replace. The independent dealer I bought it from are willing to pay 50% of the bill, so its not going to be to bad! I just wanted to have an idea where the leak comes from just in case it may be a easy fix, something like a 'o' ring or a gasket.

It's usually the pipe which ends up getting a hairline fracture. This pipe can not be purchased by itself and you have to end up replacing the whole freakin unit. Stay away from second hand ones as well. |

I thought as much! !!! I had a 'low coolant' warning on Friday but as it was going in for a service today I topped the coolant up a little and told BMW to check the EGR Cooler as that was one of the most common reasons for loosing water according to my research. Thanks for the quick reply guys! Cheers

I'm another who needed the EGR valve replacement.
How many miles has your car done? It's such a common issue I'd really be challenging BMW on this for a goodwill gesture, though if you can get it done for cheap anyway this may be simpler. As said though, it's not repairable, it needs replaced.
