We went from RRS to Porsche Macan, didnt really need the big car any more. Just picked up our second Macan and cant fault them. Our first did 27k miles in 18months, had service and tyres and was faultless. We drove a lot of the mid size cars and nothign dynamically could touch the Macan so thats what we went with, goes out to Spain with us a couple of times a year and makes for a very easy long distance drive. As my mileage has gone up we've gone from a petrol to an oil burner and please so far, although only done 3k miles so far. Facelift on it due soon though.

What happened with the two F-paces? Interested to know

Re the Porsche, in 2011 a petrol Cayenne started at £43k, vs £57k these days. Assuming the Cayenne S you found would have listed just north of £50k before options, let's say £60k with an average list of options. Doesn't sound too bad to me. Over such a long period we can't ignore the huge price rises that have happened in recent years.

I still think the Cayenne S is likely to prove too expensive for me though, given that at that price you want a few toys at least.
First one was a very early version, number of electrical gremlins - put window down, wouldn't go back up without turning car off, while infotainment system would just pack up when it wanted - not ideal when my daughter was using it to navigate to middle of nowhere.... Jag cancelled co car lease and had it back. Latest one is more reliable but still had electrical gremlins. It's a 2.0d as was other and gearbox is poor, slow to pick up at junctions. It's sort of a co car - works for a dealership chain so they are financed privately but on a special scheme. Goes back soon and being replaced by a BMW - as was last one... first time a 530d M Sport, this time a 440i MSport with MPerformance kit...

It's been a long story and one that both forum members and local dealers will be equally happy to know is over!

The next car decision has finally been made and a deposit will be paid this afternoon.

I created this thread partly for my own interest in seeing how my thoughts changed over time/experience with the cars, and they really did change! Back at the beginning, I would never have predicted the decision, or indeed one of the other members of the final 3.

In approximate order of how I now place the cars...

6. Tesla Model X - a great package, but I could not live with the interior at the price

5. Volvo XC90 - my favourite at the outset, much specced on configurator. Dealer made a royal mess of ever encouraging a purchase and it falls by the wayside without ever being driven.

4. Porsche Cayenne - amazing drive, superb quality. Just insanely expensive and probably not as practical as the others. Price the biggest killer for me.

2= G05 X5 - Overall sheer competence verging on excellence. No weak points, although the 30d is perhaps underpowered relative to others I drove and the practicality/space isn't as good as the final 2.

2= Range Rover Sport - the best drive of the lot, incredible sense of quality, luxury and wellbeing. Very good value and on a PCP assuming not paying the GFV it perhaps would have been the cheapest. Hybrid is almost a perfect drivetrain.

1. To be ordered - Land Rover Discovery. I will just leave that there and prepare for the abuse

What engine did you go for? Didn't miss anything JLR driving the Volvo. It's better to look at than it is to drive due to the 2 litre engine, which on my opinion doesn't suit the car.

And what spec do you go for? It's a bloody ugly car, like our Q7, but, a nice set of wheels and right colour etc can sort that in the main.

Why not the RR Sport. Your comments suggests it was everything and more.

Cheers for the comments guys.

Broncho that mod is superb, better than the one I have seen previously! 73henny - you see, it's just fine...

Goneinsixtyseconds 3.0 SDV6 HSE Luxury with a few options. They have upgraded the Disco to the 306bhp/700nm motor from the RRS.

creepy coupe Space and practicality. The Disco is a true 7 seater and also has an even greater sense of space in the front. When I drove the RRS I would never have imagined saying this....but when jumping in a RRS in the showroom after 48 hours in the D5 it seemed low and smaller. Outright purchase at more than 10k cheaper for a higher spec is not to be sniffed at either, but it was the practicality that won us over.

meds1976 - not yet, but it might have been punted on another site...not had chance to get the ad together properly yet. Job for the weekend.

That's fair enough then. Didn't realise you needed 7 seats, as you'd looked at some 5 seater options.

For me when buying our it wasn't a specific need for our family, but it was a nice to have given the choice. We've probably used it 10-12 times so far, and it's sometimes nice when going out with other people to go in one car if you can.

When a five seater large SUV costs the same as a 7 seat, why not if you get the chance

Yes, rather like Alex says, it's a nice to have. To be fair, the even bigger winner is boot space. The Disco has a vast boot compared with the RRS/X5.

It's also interior, spec and general drive that won me over. It took me a while to adapt to the rear numberplate, but pretty much everything else fell into place easily.

Didn't the Velar get a look in?

No Too small, it's more like a jacked up estate than a true SUV I think.

Small is probably not the right word, it's more that it is style over function packaging.

I don't really understand the Velar and who would choose it over a RRS at the higher reaches of the range. It perhaps makes more sense in 4-cylinder form.

Also a different platform - whereas the Disco shares the RRS/FFRR platform.

I like the Velar, I think it's right sized in that it's not a massive SUV but not a toy SUV either plus it's lovely inside I felt like a pea on a drum in a RRS.

Disco probably not a bad choice if you need the 7 seats and 300hp is a good amount of power the 260hp in the X5 probably not quite enough as you say.

Enjoy!

I think I went a bit "F30post blinkered mode" stating that I couldn't see why anyone would choose the Velar! Interpreting my own requirements from various car types as being everybodies.

Actually, I can see the Velar as a kind of halfway house between A6 Allroad and full SUV. Plus, of course, it has a good range of typical LR off road abilities.

Pea in a drum I felt like I'd dropped into a bathtub sitting in the RRS after the Disco. Utterly bizarre after experiencing it as such a high-riding car back last summer. Shows just how quickly we can adapt to a new norm.

I've seen a few out on the A1 recently, the drivers seemed to know how to make progress...the interior looks fabulous as well.

Great car, great choice. You cant see the back when you are driving.... and in a decent colour and wheels it doesnt look too bad... actually it does, but who cares! Next door but one have a black one, suspect it is a 2 litre and HSE spec.

So the 440 is going not the Auris? Thats a shame as the 2 car garage of D5 and 440i is probably perfect....

How long is delivery likely to take? Decided on options and colours yet? we can help you spend your money you know...
