Question MY16, OTA nav updates?

MY16 F34 with navigation (pro): are over-the-air map updates enabled as they are in the MY16 F30? I've heard yes and no. Anyone with MY16 GT and nav?

Over the air 'updates' are only related to current traffic and weather. Full map updates come out every three years or so, and they're not free.

You mean for the MY16 F34, or in general? For MY16 F30, OTA updates are for the maps and the updates are free for 3 years.

My understanding is that every few years you need to do a complete software re-install, and the cost is in the $200 range.

That's for MY15 and before. OTA is new for MY16 builds, but I would like an MY16 F34 owner with factory nav to verify, as it is not clear if every model version gets it. The quarterly OTA update uses the onboard SIM card.

My 340 is supposed to get updates over the air. I was told by BMW USA that first one for me will be about April. I have a 2015 last quarter map.

OTA map updates

Looks like 2016 3 series GT is missing out on this feature. (It is also not getting the LCI treatment, which, I think will be coming to 2017 3-GT.) The sport wagon and the sedan got lucky and are OTA enabled.

BTW don't be surprised if the dealer is not able to answer your questions about latest changes to BMW cars. My dealer, who is supposedly very well known in the area, did not know that 2013-2014 onwards BMW revised their oil change interval recommendations. The service agent at the dealer was surprised to find the iDrive suggesting an oil change after 1-year..

To me, updating maps every year is overrated. A map update every 3-4 years should be good enough.

We are not building new roads that fast are we? I will be glad if we keep our current roads in shape..

It's more about the POIs than the roads, esp. when "2015" maps have stale POI data from 2012.

I have threads clearly stating that OTA is in F34, too. Those state that the nav modules changed for all F3x builds in MY16. Thus, my question is for actual MY16 F34 owners with factory Nav to confirm.

I will be surprised if folks use BMW maps to look up POIs except an occasional gas station or quick fast food place. Touristic places don't crop up every now and then and I would imagine most of us use our phones to look up that "seafood restaurant with 5 star reviews"

Could you please copy link to threads? I seriously doubt it is the case. I don't think OTA is available for F34 MY2016. It is quite clear from the official release.

The reason/opinion of map updates is irrelevant. This thread is a request for current MY16 F34 owners with Nav (609) to verify the OTA feature.

One easy way to tell whether you can do OTA updates is to check whether your SIM in the car is a 3G or a 4G LTE? I guess you should be able to tell this by how fast your 'online searches' are (or music streaming). OTA updates are only available for cars with 4G LTE SIMs that are going to replace the 3G SIMs we got earlier.

3G allows for OTA update, too, as has been shown in MY16 F30 vehicles. It was predicted that only 4G would get it, but that was not the actual case. The way to tell is in the manual (if you can actually get the nav one), or better the nav map version in iDrive. There is a symbol that indicates an OTA update is occurring, too. I don't know this 1st-hand; I am only relaying info from posted info MY16 F30 users.

http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...ota+map+update

What MY16 F34 has is still in question.

What MY16 F34 has is still in question.

The references you have cited are all discussing hearsay. It is all one person asking questions to another, and not sure if the map updated or something else was updated.

OTA won't occur on a 3G connection, at least not for BMW the way their maps are. Their maps are large and 3G connection just won't have bandwidth to do it. Technicalities aside, I am telling this from reading official releases and not hearsay. Unless you have 4G on your car, you won't have OTA.

There are MY16 F30 folks w/3G who get OTA updates, per other threads/posts. What's different about the OTA updates, is that supposedly only regional parts of the maps are updated, as opposed to 10s of gigabytes of NA map data for the CIC/NBT systems. That official release is ambiguous as to that particular feature availability.

For the sake of re-steering this post to its intent. Let's just say we have 4G in MY16 F34 head units. Is there OTA updates or not?

Need an MY16 owner to test!

Yes !
I can confirm that my Nav map has just updated to the 2016-1 version in the last couple of days.
As pointed out above, it has only updated the UK and Ireland parts of the Euro map.
But that's more than good enough for me, and OTA too ! I never noticed any interruption to the service either.

OTA map updates (US vs. UK)

This is only for the UK. UK is getting 4G connectivity in all cars since September 2015, which is what your car must have. See below:

https://www.press.bmwgroup.com/unite...tem=node__4099

BMW enables OTA updates on a 4G connection, but not on 3G. So not surprising that you are getting OTA map updates.

DJHakim has a US Build car, which unfortunately gets a step motherly treatment and does not have 4G connectivity even for a 2016 model year (only for the GT; the sedan does have 4G connectivity). Here is the press release again for US builds:

3G does push map updates, too, on US MY16. Unless, of course, posters are just lying for fun.

That "release" was by Tim Jones. Is that BMWNA?

The posters, if any, are lying out of ignorance. Technically pushing incremental map updates is a possibility over 3G, but BMW does not do it. Neither is it going to do it retroactively to its vehicles with 3G chips (it won't make financial sense because software will have to be re-written). Cars with 3G do allow an OTA "software update" and I can bet the posters are thinking their map is being updated as well. Which. is. not. true.
