Question re: correct wheel size for winter tires

For a 2018 340i xDrive (which came with 225/45-18 tires front and rear, in case it matters), I am planning to use 225/45-18 tires for winter (i.e. same size as what the car came with) on new rims.

Is the correct wheel size 8" (18x8" ET34) or 8.5" (18x8.5" ET47) (for all 4 wheels)? The tire place says I can use either size on all 4 corners and there will be no issues (he is recommending the 8.5", but says either is available). Is this correct?

Any help would be appreciated.

225 is a good width for winters. However, on an 8.5" will be a bit stretched. Ok on an 8" rim.

I currently run 225 on an 8.5" and it's stretched a bit. If I didn't have the tires already and the rims I liked only coming in 8.5", I may have chosen a different combo.

Thanks. Do you have the 8.5" wheels on all corners? Any issues with them in the front sticking out too far?

If the 8" wheels are used in the rear, will they "tuck in" too much?

The tire guy did not think it would be any issue fitting the 225/45-18 tires on the 8.5" wheel, but your experience suggests otherwise. That is another potential problem I hadn't considered.

18x8.5 +47 will fit up front but will be tucked. the inside of the spokes will be 13mm closer to the brake caliper and inner tire shoulder will be close to the strut and spring perch.

if you are going to use 225/45/18 then do all four front wheels 18x8 +34. if it were me, i'd increase the size to 235/45/18

I'm running 8.5" x 18" ET35, 225 x 45 - 18" all around. They clear and are nice and flush.

Thanks for the input. I will probably land up sticking with the 8” wheels , which I know will fit with no problems whatsoever.

While searching, I found some nice replica wheels that are 8.5 x 18 inch with 38 offset (instead of the 35 which was recommended above). I think this makes the wheels sit 3 millimeters further in, which I don’t think will be very noticeable (at least to me). But will the 3 millimeters less of inside clearance be a problem?

(This is with 225-45-18 tires)

Hey guys same question here can you please help... Have a set of winter tires and trying to figure out the right wheels/rims to purchase... Getting different answers at tire shops and it's really confusing.

Front: 225/40 R19
Rear: 255/35 R19

Have a 2018 440i xdrive GC with m brake (blue calipers).

Not sure what size/offset to get. Need them flush please.

Thanks

Front should be 8"-8.5", +30-35. Rear should be 8.5"-9.5", +35-45.

My 430i xDrive convertible came with the 225/45-18 all around. It’s got the M sport appearance package. Tire Rack won’t let me select 17” wheels to make a winter setup.

But some have said the 17s will fit. Anyone fitted 17s?

Thanks

The 8.5 ET47 may not clear the suspension. I would go with the 8" setup as the narrower specs are usually preferred for winter. That said, 8.5 with a 225/45/18 tire will still work just fine with the appropriate offset.

Thanks. In the end, I decided on wheels that are 8.5 x 18 ET 35 or 38 (still waiting to get exact specs) - I think that should not present any issues?
