Although I do wonder if oil choice may have contributed in some way, over time. I thought most LL-04 diesel oils are Xw30 rated, not Xw40. Perhaps the thicker viscosity may have created extra drag? All conjecture, I realize.
when they teardown the engine, noticed excellent conditions of bearings, cylinder cross hatch etc.

As far as I know the chain should be replaced every 180k.
Buy 2nd hand N47 engine immediately change the chain and you can go 180k again.
Because I'm pretty sure he's just looking at whatever he can get in Sri Lanka.

Of course the easiest is to replace it with the same engine, but then he wouldn't be asking.
Main dealer quoted me 4mn SLR(USD 20,000) for brand new engine with 2 yrs unlimited millage Warranty.

Another quote from a BMW specialist garage USD 12500 for complete rebuild using genuine parts.

Or USD 8500 for complete rebuild with OEM parts

Other option I have is 2nd hand engine, lot more cheaper but cannot source one from where I live. Need to import one from UK or Germany and still no guarantee of the mileage/conditions of it.

Since 2020 March there is a complete ban of vehicles to the country due to covid related economic difficulities.lifting the ban is uncertian so no hope of buying a new one or even nearly new cars, they are listed more than twise of its original price

Therefore I do not wish to rebuild it cheaply.
Any advise using oem parts and its reliability.
I have heard horror stories spun bearing after a rebuild?

I mean, I know N47s (I have an F31 with that engine myself) have "random" timing chain issues but if it was rattling for so long on cold starts you should have got it fixed sooner. It is a well known fault after all. That's why timing chains on mine were replaced, although they lasted almost 110k miles before showing any signs of wear.

Anyways, as someone said before, it may not be a lost cause after all. It's worth checking the condition of the engine, may still be worth fixing
Replacing the N47 with a B47 sounds like more headache than it's worth tbh

It definitely is a bummer tho
Repair looks extensive to me, both camshafts, all Values, rocker arms, hydrolic lifters, cam housing, oil pump, timing cover etc..

I joined the timing chain club today... the chain on my 2014 328d let go out of nowhere. Had 120k miles on the odometer.

Your government is a joke.

Can't you import via India or is that blocked off too?
