Wow, hell of a price! Typical price for non dealer (but still with warranty) is £400-500 fitted with ACS. Lorcan an will be along shortly to advise.

How long should it take for a professional outfit with the right equipment to fit a set of springs - would 3 hours in total (45 minutes a corner) be a reasonable estimate?

AA Silencers, Cheadle 01538 752345. Don't be put off by the name, they have a great setup there. Speak to Justin Grocott. Expect to pay around £250 inc vat for fitting and wheel alignment, plus the cost of the springs.

3 hours 45 mins is our recommended time, including wheel alignment.

I got quoted £1153 by Barons Hindhead a couple of hours ago, even after questioning it they reckoned it took 3 hours just to change front springs on an Xdrive.

Deutsch Tech Milton Keynes quoted me £646 - exactly the same car

Thanks, I was thinking about the fitting excluding the alignment check so, on the basis the couple of alignment checks I've had done have probably taken around 45 minutes each, 3 hours 45 minutes for the full job sounds reasonable!

However, if labour is assumed at £100/hour (probably generous for an independent up North!) and an alignment check is around £80 I'd say anything over £700 for the springs, fitting and alignment is starting to sound a tad expensive; your chap at Cheadle sounds like £570 all-in which feels more like it!

AA are working on £55 per hour + vat, x 3.75 hours = £247.50 inc vat. They have their own wheel alignment ramp, proper facilities, nice waiting area with iPads for customers to use. Sounds like a smart place. Knights BMW recommended them.

Mulgari in Bracknell. Ben is very busy though so you might struggle to get in the door.

Sounds like they are looking at the BMW instructions, not ours. The BMW instructions tell you to pull the drive shafts out. Not necessary, and costs a fortune in bolts too.

Hi Lorcan,
Your man at Knights Bmw didn't even bother getting back to me when I left an ACS enquiry with them a few months back. So not impressed with them.

Still waiting to sort out mine....

Also just curious why a dealer would recommend an idenpendent ? Have they got any links?

Mani

It's not the dealership as such, it's Steve Cooper from Knights. Knights have been bought out by Lookers who don't want to get involved in AC Schnitzer for now, as it's their first BMW dealership. Steve from Knights is leaving at the end of this week and recommended AA to us as a lot of his pals from the BMW Car Club use them and recommend them.

I paid £100 quid plus £46 for a hunter alignment

The alignment I got half price
The indie that did the springs (not on lorcan list) didn't reconnect the self levelling mechanism, slightly rounded the torn bolts and didn't reset my lights. £570 is great value imo for the peace of mind

Do these springs also improve the handling or just for ride height?
