Tuned N20 DV or BOV upgrade

Hi, so I have a couple of mods installed on my F31 this includes a CTS BOV, I wasnít really looking for sound but mostly for rialibility since Iím running on higher boost with stock turbo. My JB4+ is set on map3 with 18 psi boost which is really great and looking forward on upgrading to BM3 while retaining the JB4 for the meth kit. Sometimes when flooring boost raises to 20.9 so itís not always stable at 18, Iím thinking this could be a battle between the piggyback JB4 messing with the ECU. Car feels great way better than before so I canít really say that the CTS BOV is a negative upgrade since all mods were done at the same time. Besides the loud ppshhhh sound in between shifts or when letting go of the gas pedal, I donít feel any power or boost loss. CTS is great quality well built only issue is that they donít supply in their kit a vaccum boost tap for the intake so be aware before installing.
Since my personality isnít showing off, the ppsshhh sound gets to me sometimes LOL I donít really care that much I can live with it.
Now hereís my question towards experienced techs, am I really having power or boost loss with the BOV, If so would you kindly explain how?
And would replacing the CTS BOV by let's say GFB DV+ make any difference in power?
Thanks

i am not an experienced tech nor do i have any yet.

i've been meaning to upgrade the dv at some point but prefer a complete unit swap and something better than just upgraded internals. i have been waiting for Turbosmart to come out with one for N20, they replied that they might in the future but i'm not holding my breath.

"if it ain't broke, don't fix it"...if you're happy with CTS Turbo blow-off, i'd just leave it. the only way to know if a GFB DV+ is better(or worse) is getting one and comparing them. i don't think it's worth the trouble.

Makes good sense, the CTS one is a complete unit versus the GFB thatís more like a add on spacer with small hardware. Letís see maybe some expert will catch this and give his feedback.

i believe this (n20)gfb dv+ thread had a lot of debate within. most of it about flutter or compressor surge(from backflow to the turbo), indicated by the unique sound the GFB DV+ usually makes especially before break in.

https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1482708

the gfb dv+ will maintain boost longer and dump it slower due to a stronger spring and single exit. i believe during shifts is where it's benefit lies. if the CTS is dumping all of it between shifts, i suppose it could be detrimental on a stock car, but since you're are high boost, maybe not so much? idk.

maybe you can "take one for the team" and get the GFB DV+ for an objective comparison. TIA, j/k

Interesting, from my experience with the CTS doesnít feel like itís dumping all the boost in between shifts. Actually I donít feel any turbo lag, I guess it all depends how long you let go of the gas pedal. I only say this because I hear the dumping pshhh sound only when letting go of the pedal. It stops as soon as you press the pedal so this probably means that it doesnít dump all the pressure boost.

seems like it works great. i say forget the GFB and just get the BM3 flash. the power delivery will be smoother and just better.

So I've had my eye on the Turbosmart for a while now. After looking at things on RealOEM, it looks like the M2 N55 uses the same DV as the N20/26. (Real OEM part page here) So does that mean we can use the Turbosmart VR11? I'm almost tempted to get one and try

nice find. that'd be nice if you "take one for the team" but i hope you have friends with N55 M2 if it doesn't work out...

edit added: i went to several bmw parts sites and found the oem dv part number for the m2(n55), x4(m40i) to be 11-657-601-058, which the turbosmart vr11 replaces. unfortunately the N20 oem dv part number is 11-657-609-210. i have seen bmw list different part numbers for the same item before* but i'd be hesitant about this one since they are very different engines.

*an example of this are n20/n55 intercoolers. they are the same part but have different numbers for n20 vs n55. i've also seen this with suspension dampers and springs, same parts with different part numbers for different cars. it's quite annoying and confusing that they do this and they often confuse themselves because their own parts guys are unaware of this.

I've installed the GFB DV+ and I can tell you now that my car feels much more responsive. I can definitely feel the boost holding between gears too.

I just YOLO'd and bought a VR11. If the M2 N55 uses the same GFB DV+, I think the chances are good it'll work. I'll keep you posted

Any update with this? I'm looking to do the same but was holding off to know if the VR11 was a straight bolt-on affair compared to the GFB+.

I haven't gotten around to it yet. The VR11 is on my nightstand haha. I'll do the install when I replace my front bumper, probably in a week or two
