Best tire options for f30 xdrive

Hi All,

I recently purchase the following rims for my 2013 335xi xdrive to replace my stock 18inch rims. The car is not lowered or anything just standard oem setup.

19x8.5 Niche Sector Gloss Anthracite M197 5x120 +35mm offset
19x9.5 Niche Sector Gloss Anthracite M197 5x120 +40mm offset

I was looking for suggestions for tire sizes, I would like to run something with the most sidewall possible since NYC has a lot of potholes.

not sure why you'd opt for 19" and a thinner sidewall if you are concerned with potholes but since you already have...,

245/40/19(26.7") front, 275/35/19(26.6"), rear will have the tallest sidewall without interference.

fwiw, these larger tires will have increased rolling resistance from width, heightened gearing from being taller and increased moment of inertia from heavier weight furthest from the hub, along with heavy cast wheels with heavy barrels(MOI) will have a negative effect on your acceleration and braking and handling sharpness. so don't be surprised.

Thanks for the info alohasurftoad.

What about the factory wheels, I think it's the 400-wheel 18-inch. They have the 225/45/18 all around. Can I use tires a bit larger(more meaty appearance) or a staggered setup on these 400 18-inch wheels?

you can use 235/45/18(recommend) or even 245/45/18 for max beef. imo 245/45/18 is too beefy(appearance) but thisismikeyb has been using this size for years.

235/45/18

What Alohasurftoad said, the man is the guru! I’ll just add…

Guys in NYC with 19” wheels typically complain about increased tire/wheel damage vs 18” configurations. Non-runflat tires do help with that because they are more forgiving. The two all season tires most commonly recommended are the Continental DWS06 Plus or the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S4.
Note: I’m going to add more here in an edit. Having problems with this new version of the app!

I’ve been using 245/40-18 with a square setup on my XDrive on the stock BMW 400M 18x8.0 ET34 wheels. It’s an awesome setup. It allows front to back tire rotation that keeps the tires wearing and performing evenly though out their lifespan.

The staggered setups that you see with 400M wheels are actually using a wider 18x8.5” rear wheel with an ET42 (I think?)
Then you are back to a staggered setup that can’t be rotated. Fronts are 225 and rears 255. There may be a slightly larger combination of tire sizes that still stays within XDrive guidelines.

But it’s very difficult to find a pair of 400M 18x8.5’s by themselves. Typically you’d have to buy a staggered set of 400M’s and then sell your square set.

I’m a much bigger fan of square over staggered. BMWs because of suspension and alignment tend to wear the insides of rear tires and the outsides of front tires. So rotating them front to back keeps tire wear even. Performance tires are expensive so I’d rather get full performance and full life out of them by being able to rotate.

Could I also use 225/40/19 front and 255/35/19 rear ?

225/40/19-255/35/19 is the OEM staggered size combo on F3/4 series. 225 is stretched on 8.5, 255 slightly stretched on 9.5. if you curb or hit a pothole there will be little to zero protection.

235/40/19-265/35/19 is the happy medium and the best 19" staggered size combo on 8.5/9.5 on x-drive(or rwd) for F3/4 series.

if you do 235/40/19+265/35/19, your setup will look like wdeerfield, except your rear wheel will be 5mm further out since his rear offset is +45 and yours is +40
