Someone pranged the new 340i.

I've only had it 2 months and came back to find some complete bellend had swiped the front offside and buggered off.

Any suggestions as to the sort of repair. Bearing in mind the car is only a few months old with 900 miles on it.

Is this a bodyshop job do you think, would you risk a smart repair, is it worth popping into BMW and getting a quote from the stealers bodyshop as a last resort (I only say this as someone claimed they had a similar job done for £250 by BMW) . I know of a few bodyshops locally that offer two prices, with or without Insurance.

The bottom pics show it after a quick clean up.

That’s a bugger mate, sorry to hear of your woes. Was your car parked near any CCTV?

The front bumper will be at least £500 for BMW to respray, and looks like you need a new headlight plus some damage to the wing, so definitely over £1k worth. Probably best to go through insurance.

Sorry to hear this. Sadly it’s a reflection of society today.
I’d go to a local insurance approved body shop. That’s what most dealers do anyway. However, as teaston says, your headlight will be a bigger and more expensive issue. Expect that to be £1k fitted from BMW.

Cheers mate. excess is £450 but have protected no claims for what its worth it will still result in increased premiums. The headlight has cleaned up just a scratch or two that may come out with a bit of work. No damage to any metal.

Depends upon how OCD you are. Those front bumpers really get stone chipped, so even if you get an almost perfect repair, you will soon damage it again. If it was me I would go to a good local body shop and look to pay maybe no more than £200.

I had mine sprayed across the bottom around 20k miles ago and 15 months. It’s looking pretty stone chipped again now.

Feel bad for you!

However I would be inclined to find a local body shop. I know a guy who owns a garage/bodyshop and he would probably charge me £150-£200 and get it pretty much spot on. It's not like it's at eye level so I think you could end up spending a lot, either in an expensive repair or increased insurance premiums for very little benefit.

Agree with Jeff123 and 330XDave, good local body shop and then order a clear protective scratch covering for your front bumper, should protect it from those future stone chips (when you eventually come to sell remove said covering and front bumper should still look like new), also it will easily come in under your £450 excess.

If I bought mine new, I might have considered the bumper protection. I don't drive too quickly or close to cars in front, but these front spoilers just seem to attract stones.

Be careful not to remove the UV coating on the headlight!

What a cu*t that driver is, gutted for you.

I would echo the above independent body shop shop. I had a prang earlier in the year cheapest BMW quote £1300 highly recommended independent £450.

Where about in the UK are you?

I'll get a few quotes from Indy's so won't touch it, hopefully they can cost it in. I just had the other light replaced under warranty (condensation) and the dealer was telling me it was the best part of a grand as mentioned by someone further up.

Thanks for the replies everyone, appreciate it but looking at that other accident thread its nothing in the big scheme of things, just a sodding inconvenience.

Apparently it's possible to polish the scratches out and then reapply the UV coating, Norwich BMW were going to do it on mine until they found out it was my insurance company paying.

My sympathies OP. I had something similar happen to mine in my work car park. Nobody owned up to that either and CCTV didn't cover where I was parked.
Slightly less paint damage on mine, but they managed to dent the bumper. I got quoted £190 for the repair by a local body shop.

Sorry to see the damage, and hopefully karma will catch up with whoever did it.

Slightly off topic, but how much condensation did you have for the warranty replacement?

My drivers side headlamp has a LOT of condensation, but I read that it’s considered normal in a lot of cases. My passengers side gets a bit misted occasionally, but it comes and goes. My drivers side has enough that the droplets are running down the inside of the lens.

Sounds like it should be a no-hassle warranty repair. I'd be sure to have pictures to provide to your SA but I can't imagine they'd say no.

Sorry for you OP - did this happen home/ work? Did you check if any neighbours had dash cams with the parking mode on.?

Someone at work recently had their rear bumper clipped and luckily was caught on the camera of the car opposite them.

imo on a new car i'd get a bodyshop to sort it out properly.. easily done less than our insurance excess.

For the headlight just remove the plastic rear cap and let it condensate for a new one

My own experience over the years shows that a BMW dealer will quote you double that of an insurance-approved body shop for paintwork repairs. Taking into account the headlight damage you either go thru your insurance or talk to a local body shop.

You guys mentioning the cost of headlights etc - my Mrs reversed into a stack of shopping trollies (&#128531 in the 435d and it's cracked and put a hole in the rear tail light. Because they're split into two, can I replace one part of it (the outer) and do you know how much that might cost? Thanks.

Hi. I did a thread with some pictures here about the headlight.

It's one part. Note the rear light unit is significantly less than a front headlamp.

Quote from bodyshop who have a decent reputation it seems (father in law uses them so seen their work and he's always pranging his car) £180 plus VAT for the bumper, £100 to polish scratches out of headlight and reapply UV.

There is a very slight mark on the metalwork (no bigger than a small stone chip) they will touch up.

Now I'm more paranoid than before, just popped into the local Tesco and its rammed (I usually park in the corner). Ah well, these things are designed to be used and enjoyed not wrapped in cotton wool.

For those who asked earlier, I was at a football match. The car was parked on a side street with no obvious CCTV.
