How to: TorqByte CM5-LT Meth System Install

This system is not yet too common on BMW’s yet and seems to be one of the best option if not going JB4. Therefore I decided to make a post about it. This took a good amount planning and harassing both TorqByte and PTF more than I’d like to admit. Both were beyond helpful along the entire way and went way above and beyond to assist with the set up. I’m still working on a boost cut failsafe that involves a relay to interrupt/cut the signal to the OEM EWG harness when there is a meth flow issue. I just don’t have that worked out yet. I’m open to ideas and suggestions.

I will also eventually be going to port injection, but wanted to start small. Currently starting with one small 3gph nozzle on 100% meth and will add another small one when tuning progresses.

***EDIT***

I have to redo some of my looms because my OBD port does not have 12v IGN/ACC pin in it for my OBD plug. I will loom that wire in with my GPO1 wire to my engine compartment fuse box for 12v IGN/ACC and relay location. Will post updates when I have time when I come back from my business trip to redo it. I will also add to my post how to do the boost cut using the pump current draw, flow sensor and utilizing the BMS EWG harness to avoid any splicing!

This is my list. Yours may vary.

Methanol bits:

TorqByte CM5-LT
TorqByte BMW OBD plug adapter
Littelfuse JCAS040.X - 40amp fuse
Littelfuse FHJC1001G fuse holder
BMS stealth tank
ProMeth 1.3GPM DDP 5800 pump
20’ 1/4 nylon tube
ProMeth 20psi check valve with 1/4” pushlock fittings
1/4" Hose to 3/8 NPT Male, Straight
1/4" Hose to 3/8 NPT Male, Swivel Elbow
Billet Nozzle Holder With 1/4" Hose Fitting, Elbow × 2 (2 for dual nozzle)
1/4" Hose Tee Fitting (for dual nozzle)
Appropriate nozzle(s) for your set up

Install stuff:

PTFE Teflon paste - for all threaded connectors
Marine type heat shrink assorted connectors - https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01LX...op_mb_pd_title
Crimpers - https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0069...op_mb_pd_title
Marine type 3:1 adhesive heat shrink - https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B075L...op_mb_pd_title
3/8” Tech Flex 50-75’ - https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B004S...op_mb_pd_title
Terminal end caps - https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B06XC...op_mb_pd_title
Posi Tap wire taps - bought from BMS

Napkin drawing of my setup.

First I started by cleaning up the wiring harnesses with Tech Flex and heat shrink. All of the harnesses came with individual wires coming out of every plug. My OCD would not allow me to install it like this...

Connected the OBD harness to the correct wires from the main input harness. Also capped off every wire that was unused with terminal caps. The unit comes with its own MAP sensor. I decided to tap my TMAP sensor for vac/boost signal, so I cut the torqbyte MAP sensor plug off of the wires (black, blue and red) from the main input harness.

Decided to put the CM5-LT unit in the passenger footwell. Ran power wires from the battery to the front, removed the passenger side door trim and ran the main AC and pump wire looms in there. Power wires went to the front to the CM5 and pump wires ran from the CM5 back to the pump. Power wires connected to battery and battery ground on chassis.

Ran nylon tubing from the pump along the driver side of the car. Removed all interior door trim panels to tuck it inside the carpeting.

The MAP sensor harness ran from an opening under the dash to the driver side of the car. Pulled that through and then both that and the fees tube pulled through a hole in the firewall just above the dead pedal foot rest. I had to pop a grommet out of the hole in order to do so.

I then used the Posi Taps to connect the MAP signal wire (blue) to the signal wire (yellow) of the TMAP sensor. CM5 Ground wire (black) connects to TMAP ground (black and yellow). CM5 red power wire got capped off.

I then found this handy hose clamp that was sitting empty in a handy spot right next to the charge pipe ports. I zip tied the check valve there and finished running the lines.

In order for you to use your OEM 2.5bar TMAP sensor your need some data. Being on BM3 I signed up to be a tuner so I could get into my stock tune file. All of the data needed is under sensors. This is the data needed: min voltage, max voltage, gradient, and offset. Your numbers may/will differ!

That data needs to translate to this:

This is how:

For the 3.5bar sensor this is how:

Any questions just shoot me a PM.

Epic DIY - a lot of good info here although I have just finished harassing PTF and TorqByte myself - Alex is great

And here is how I have designed my fail safe. Boost solenoid patch from JB4 (can buy this alone from BMS). Relay that is default open and then the GPO to default closed. This way if anything fails boost will be cut even if its the CM5-LT itself or the relay

BTW - a TMAP patch can be used from BMS also if you dont want to tap into the factory harness.

This is exactly what I was planning on doing. I found the EWG harness on the BMS website and this strategy was posted in TorqByte’s tech blog. Just haven’t gotten around to finishing it or updating this post yet due to me traveling for work.

What are you using to trigger the GPO? Are you going off of a range of pump current draw for scenario of blocked line or empty tank?

Would you mind posting where you drew power from for the relay, how you did it/type of fuse used, where you installed your relay, how you ran the GPO wire if your CM5LT is inside the cabin, and so on? Let’s make this make this as comprehensive as possible for future users and abandoners of the JB4.

Where did you find the TMAP patch from BMS? I’m bummed now that you said that and I tapped the factory wiring! Ha. Oh well.

My idea of a meth map. What is your plan? As we spoke about, when I ran JB4 it would take 100% flow from 8psi even from high gear and low rpm so I dont really think grading the map matter much.

I initially started with this:

Upped it to this:

Torqbyte sent me a file and I modified it to this:

I am currently running one 3gph nozzle with 100% meth. As soon as I get home from this business trip I’m switching it out to one 5gph nozzle. I will do some logging and and will reassess the map and may potentially add an additional 2-3gph nozzle to the 5gph nozzle.

Hehe so we agree on the map. I am actually thinking of allowing even more boost before it kick in. I have 5-6 different nozzles that I'll flow test (again) one of these days. I know they don't deliver as advertised.

TorqByte is aware of the issue.... Until the software issue gets resolved, you will have to re-enter the correct boost data and map sensor data each time you load the software/file or read file from your unit. The upside to it is, just by connecting to the unit that change is not written until you click “write”. The downside is each time you wish to make a change, you need to edit all that info in addition to what you want to change and click write....

***EDIT*** Update is on the way!!!

I made a small video - it's a bit crude. I might make a rev 2 at some point so please give me some feedback

Really not too involved, but definitely not just a plug and play system like the JB4. It definitely does take some work to get set up, but it is well worth it. Its a very nice system that is capable of so much!

Please let us know if you have any questions if you get another.

yea at the time they didnt have the plug and play adapter to the obd2 port so i was lost on the wiring. Was going to go with the VC-50 but now might reconsider. Thanks bro.

Great support from the Torqbyte team. Within two days a new SW revision was release to support the BMW N55 MAP sensor

---------
Changelog
---------

1.11.0
* Fix min/max boost not being loaded from a saved file correctly
* Increase slope/intercept/atmosphere/deadband limits for custom MAP sensors
* New limits are:
Slope 0-99
Intercept 0-1023
Atmosphere 0-1023
Deadband 1-100
* Auto-load the last ttini file on startup, if it exists

Not really an update on the system, but a damper was put on the tune... Bad misfires up top, spark plugs are done for. I’ll replace them and retune late October when I’m back from business. Hopefully we’ll be able to actually start advancing timing then... I bet it has a decent amount left in it just in timing.

100% meth and 5gph nozzle
AFE filter/stock intake
ER catless downpipe

Tested all my nozzles and found a CM10 that is under performing. Spray pattern looks good. All nozzles from BMS.

Bought a check valve to simplify my system as I dont really trust my solenoid. I am also not duty managing the solenoid so a simple check valve make more sense.

Seller did not reply about this valve opening pressure so I did a flow test.

Solenoid 100% open = 430g/min
Check valve = 365g/min (down 15%)

Flow can be compensated with a bigger nozzle but the pressure is lost which will impact atomization - I think it is worth it though for a more reliable system

I use a 20psi check valve from ProMeth. Rodney (ProMeth) recommended it over the solenoid for the simplicity of my system.
