Steering rack gear

So it seems the gear is on its way out I have seen from a few people that its just a recall that I can take in to get fixed for free anyone know if thats true I have a 2015 435i it has started to make all the unusual clunks when turning and also does the same when the car is off and you wiggle the steering wheel a little. If this is not something bmw would do for free I saw there is a repair kit that can be easily done obviously would love to get it done for free if its a thing otherwise who knows what those people were talking about and it would probably be way cheaper for me to do it then if I went to bmw.

I think what you are referring to is the clunking when you grab the steering wheel and pull it side to side with the engine off? I have the same issue which is different than the BMW TSB for the bolts. What I believe you are referring to needs this component.

Also, here is a video of someone with the same issue that fixed his.

Albeit, I would inspect the bolts holding the steering gear assembly in place and have them replaced if they have not been already.

Yes this is the exact thing I was talking about just want to make sure I wasn't wrong also is this something that would be repaired for free if not I can do it myself I have a lift. So far I went to check my car today and it still makes the noise when the steering wheel is off but the noise well the car is on is gone. I assume the gear is still somewhat good but going out.

I'm not sure if the dealers are handling this or not? I bought the piece about a week ago, but have not installed it yet as I have seen some people say there is a programming adjustment that needs to be done and some that say there is no programming required so I plan on stopping by me dealer to confirm sometime in the next week.

I would just be careful with that the dealer might say yes even tho it doesn't need it after all it is a mechanical piece most likely just an alignment.

My indie mechanic actually had to buy an alignment tool from BMW to feel confident they were going to complete the steering rack fix correctly. They are a very experienced bmw mechanic, so I took their word for it. I originally intended to do it myself but glad I didn’t.

The tool sell for about $40 shipped from a guy in the UK off eBay. I've got the parts and tool in my garage. Job is supposedly less than 30 minutes. Waiting on a slower work week to do this.

Dude even puts instructions on the auction listing. Good stuff.

Sorry just a quick one. Does this steering rack repair kit is reliable? Anyone does it? Is it still working fine after long run?

If the clunking doesn't stop and you decide to replace the steering rack they are about 300-600 used plus 100-200 to code the rack to your car, make sure you replace the rack whole otherwise you might have problems with the belt slipping (what happened to me). Don't worry if that's the case its an easy job.

This would be great, but I'm wondering if this only extends to original owners? I bought my car used and was about to repair this myself when I came across this document which has me second guessing the repair. Although easy enough to change out, setting the backlash looks critical and requires removal of tie rods etc. then an alignment afterwards.

Always wondered why the kit came with the inner tie rod boot clamps and now I know.
