Back in 2015 I purchased a ‘new’ 2013 328 with 26 miles on the clock. Before I traded it in for the e90 335 the n26 was getting louder and louder with the diesel (timing chain) clatter. IMHO go for built dates 03/15 and newer or if you do go for a pre 03/15 built date obviously get one that has had the timing chain/guides replaced under warranty.

Oddly this thread is very timely. Current E91 owner with 156,000km. Been shopping around a bit as it’s a great car and very well maintained but there are a few things I don’t have that I wish I did. Right now looking at two different cars. A 2010 E61 - which I am well aware of on issues pertaining specifically to the E61 (looking at you tailgate and rear wagon issues) as well as the N54. That car has 125,000km on it and needs some TLC, drive it and ran codes etc. I know exactly what I might be in for as far as ownership experience (lots of headaches when or if I can get the car sorted out)

As well a 2014 335xi (I live where it gets real winter so AWD is a must) with 68,000km on it. It’s at the local BMW dealer so CPO is in play here. It’s a January 2014 build so I need to find out about the wastegate and water pump improvements. I still don’t know service history but am looking for some input. My understanding is that the N55 and 8 speed )it’s an auto) are decently reliable and that peripheral stuff in the car may be more of an issue.

I can deal with switches and cameras (it’s got surround view) and it sounds like rattles.

I have driven the 535. It’s a nice car, M sport, comfort seats etc and am driving the 335 Monday.

Any other considerations and input would be great.

I am pretty handy and do almost all my own maintenance now as well.

If you can get a CPO plus you can do your own maintenance you should be good. For the most part these cars are reliable but every now and then you might get a lemon. It's not that much different from any other brand in my experience. You can get cheap OEM parts on FCP Euro (which is not the same as genuine but essentially it is the same but at a much lower price).

It's a nice car but his is brand new can't expect many issues with a new car. I'm looking at a 12-14 and was wondering what problems I'll run into with higher miles? I had an e92 (335 coupe) loved it but had to get rid of it before hpfp failed and all that good stuff. Replaced my cic through dealer and was pretty much done with the car after that. Will I experience those issues with an f30? I've looked around and don't see many people complain and reliability. Thanks

Have one of the earliest models (320i ed) and I can say that it s one of the most realiable cars in the market. Go for it.

Car is 2013, 37 K miles. No oil consumption. No problems. No leaks. No performance loss. Very very economical.
However it has the N13 1.6lt 125KW 170 HP engine which you can not find in the US market.
Plus ZF8 transmission is super, just changed the trans fluid at 37K miles and it got even smoother.
If I were you I would go for 328i considering better fuel consumption compared to 335i which will not make much difference considering the speed limits in the US.

Any more details? How many miles on the car? Mods? What were you doing when it happened? Any signs of problems leading up to it?

Go for the 335d, it has 7 more hp but crucially 169ft-lb more torque & is only sold as an X-drive. Diesel = 0-60 in 4.6s Petrol = 5.3s !

Diesel has lower emissions & better fuel economy for an average 630 miles per tank, verses 420 ish for the petrol version !

As always YMMV

My Dad has owned a 2012 328i since 2015 and 25k miles. It now has 103,000 miles on the odometer and except for 1 problem that was taken care of under warranty (brake light failure due to faulty wire) it has not had a single problem that was the fault of the car.

2 bent rims due to my Mom hitting potholes. 1 lost key fob down the toilet (don't ask, my Mom again) and 1 replacement driver side mirror (Mom, yet again, that trashcan came out of nowhere!).

Mom and Dad have loved the car and it gets frequent long trips to see Grandkids which has probably helped with the car lasting as long as it has and the lack of problems.

2012 328i, 151k miles, only issues I've encountered are having blown front struts and I get a drivetrain malfunction sometimes while driving, but the car never goes into limp mode or reduced power. I'm guessing that's either a sensor or a boost leak but I'm too cheap to pay for it to be looked at lol. The car is running a stage 2 tune @ 22 psi, otherwise entirely stock engine bay. I kind of want to see how long the car will last for, but I also want to sell it so I can buy a lowe mileage 335i

2014 85k miles on a 6 cylinder turbo no issues so far - accept recalls.

if you've got no issue after 150k miles then you are doing well.

both my previous 4 cylinder turbos had £3k of issues each after 8 years over and above maintenance.

regular maintenance is key - many people have gone over the magical 200k miles with no engine and transmission probs, with proper maintenance. though i would argue the odd fans, pumps and electricals would have been replaced on the way to that 200k miles.

Do you have the automatic transmission and if so did you change the fluid at any point?

8 speed auto, never touched the tranny fluid (although may have been changed before when it was under warranty).

Also, I decided to buy a foxwell scanner, and found the DT error is throwing a code for boost leak and low air pressure, so I'd put money in it being either the pneumatic wastegate ($70 part) or chargepipe (I'm still running the OEM ones)

Good to know. Another data point for no ATF change yet the transmission is working fine (presumably no performance issues there?).

It is unlikely that it was changed under warranty unless there was some kind of transmission issue, which is hardly seen on the ZF8 in these cars.
