btw - if you wanna post links to the cars we can take a look and check if we see any red flags or if one looks substantially better than the other.

The dealer/salesman is most likely just feeding you a line. Do get a PPI. Also, take the last seven of the VIN to a BMW dealer service department and ask if they will check the service records for you. You’ll need to go in person as it’s very unlikely they’ll do it over the phone. Also, check the in-service date. A 2016 may very well have some new car warranty left on it.
No this is not a BMW dealer and yes that's what made me wonder as BMW was giving free maintenance. The car still has factory warranty for another 5000 miles and the dealer said they would provide extended warranty which should be good to be used at any BMW dealership. But anyway I'll try to get service record from a BMW dealer.

I like the 435 build. Msport is nice. Hard to tell what is detailed vs wear in the pics. Mileage is a bit high, but appears to have been well serviced according to carfax.

Go drive them both and see what you think.

I can see why you’re torn between the two. I used to always be a coupe guy....until I got my first sedan. I really like the sedan practicality. So, I’d probably choose the 340i, assuming whatever damage it had was well repaired. It’s a Sport line, not an M Sport, but the Track Handling pkg pretty much makes up for that. It includes upgraded brakes and cooling as well as the variable sport steering and the adaptive M suspension.

I like the equipment on the 435i. It is an M Sport. The nav/iDrive is nice to have, as well as the rear view camera and the park distance control.

It would be hard for me to pass on the B58 motor and the lower mileage with some new car warranty.

But damn I really like the looks of the 435, that's I'm more biased to 435 even it has more miles on it.

I get it, then search for a 440 not a 435 if you plan on keeping the car long term.

The B58 is that good...

I started searching for a used bwm and found 2 cars that I like one is 2016 340i with 44k miles and 2015 435i (M package) with 56k miles priced at $25000 and $24000 respectively. Though I really like the styling of the coupe, I'm hesitant to consider it over the 340i because of the high mileage compared to 340i. I need your help in deciding between these two cars. If I pull the trigger and buy 435i is there anything that I need to look out for. I heard bwm needs a major service every 30k miles, if yes what would that cost me as the coupe is almost due a major service. Any maintenance cost comparison on both cars is much appreciated.

BTW, they both are 6-speed manual's.

You already got some great advice from multiple forum members. Just chiming in to reassure you that you are doing all of the right things in your evaluation. 3-series vs 4-series is a personal preference or family/utility preference. N55 and B58 engine's are both strong and reliable. The fact that you currently drive a 2016 leads me to assume that you keep cars 2-3 years.

So I'd tend to tell you to just drive both and choose the one that you will enjoy driving for the next couple of years. Unlike many cars, BMW's are often chosen because they are so damn much fun to drive, like you expressed after driving the M4!

A BMW dealer friend told me that regular oil changes are most important with these high tech engines. He gets beautiful looking leased BMWs turned in without ever having an oil change, even though it was included in the lease of the car for free!!! They dish it off to second rate used car dealers to get rid of it. If either of these two cars doesn't have PROOF of regular oil changes then assume that oil changes weren't done and walk away from that particular car!

There isn't really a big 30k mile maintenance but at 60k miles they usually need spark plugs and coils. Based on time, they both may need a battery soon which can be $300-$350 since programming is involved too. Brake fluid replacement is every two years for safety so see if that was ever done.

Dealer maintenance for both parts and labor can be absurdly high. Check BimmerShops website to see what independent BMW shops may be in your area. Watch what parts they use though. The ones that use dealer parts will be high cost jobs and ones that use cheap junk parts will be substandard jobs. I tend to choose my parts carefully, but them and take them to my Indy to install. You can make some great improvements by choosing some excellent parts (that are often cheaper than dealer parts) when maintenance items come due for replacement such as tires, brakes, shocks, air filter, cabin filter, etc You can read up on that stuff on this forum.

Good luck! Hope this helps!

B58 is the better engine but I'm not a fan of the red leather interior of the 340i you posted and it also doesn't have Nav or the M-Sport trim, whereas the 435i has a better interior color, Nav and M-Sport.

Also, there is a massive difference between a 2dr and 4dr so you have to think about that with regards to it being your daily driver. I have kids so a 4dr was a must.

Even without kids, the GC is just so much more versatile...

Have you test driven both cars yet OP? I hate the look of the small screen, makes the interior look a bit on the el cheapo side. However, you can still get the big screen/Nav added through a junkyard or if you want to make the dealer richer. As mentioned before, it just comes down if a coupe or 4 door is more practical for you.

Lettuce know OP!

As someone who has driven the N55 and now own a B58 the difference is staggering. Get the 40i if you can.

The colour on the 340i, drivers side looks slightly off in the pictures, has it been accident repaired?

Yes, car was in accident, dealer says it might be a minor bumper damage but the autocheck report doesn't say where the damage was.

Thanks for the help guys, I test drove both cars last weekend. 340i looked and drove nice but lack of Navigation, rear view camera, accident, no M-package, no service history etc... made me skip the car. So I went with 435i, for what it's worth I got a 2 year limited warranty from the dealer which he said should be good at any Ford or BMW dealership. So far I'm in love with the car. Already put close to 600 miles on it, so far no issues.

Cheers!!

The 4 series obviously has a different styling, but if you like the way the 3 series looks the 340i has the newer and improved B58 engine which may within itself be worth it. Some 2016s may still even be under warranty depending on when the original owner bought it.

Enjoy your new ride. I’ve only had mine for a couple of months now and look forward to driving it every chance I get.

Just purchased a 2016 435i M Sport. It has not been delivered yet. Its on its way from Virginia but trust me, when you have been looking for a long time you know when to pull the trigger. It was not the exact spec I wanted but it hit all the key points I was looking for only thing is its black and I wanted it white. Still got the red interior to die for so it was happy with that. And finding another spec like similar to I was looking for took forever to come by so I had to pull the trigger on this one since it was priced just right too.
