You can see the wire going into the sill.

I didn't want to mess with wires, so ordered a pair of these, with the BMW logo:

https://bloomcar.myshopify.com/colle...37911392288964

It's battery powered, so no wires. The light changes colors and flashes as shown in the video. I'm on the fence about that. It uses magnets attached to underside of the door to trigger the internal on/off switch. I found that the distance from the bottom of the door to the sill is too far for the included magnets to work, but a couple of 3/16" thick large magnets from Walmart did the trick. Shipping is from China, which takes about ten days.

I purchased the bmw ones from the bmw website or maybe one of the online bmw parts sites. Can't remember. Like the ones on the website that Billfitz noted they have a replaceable battery. Mine have been running well for more than a year now and I have had no issues to date. They are clearly not needed but I think in the end, for me at least, they make the car look better especially at night.

I had the BMW OEM sill lamps. The first one died from water getting in and corroding it after two years, the second one gave up the ghost two weeks ago. That's why I got these. They use a rechargeable battery, using a standard cell phone charger and cable. Every few months you pull them and charge them overnight. They're held onto the sills magnetically, so it's easy to pop them out and put them back in.

All of the products in this store are from China on Aliexpress or Ebay for a third of the price, tried a lot of them and they don't last unfortunately so all went in the bin.

Same with the Chinese illuminated door sills in this thread, they fail, get water logged and scratch like crazy. Ended up buying OEM battery ones, and they work perfectly, had them 2 years so far with no issues.

The OEM are from China as well, and fail they will, sooner or later, as they're not waterproof. The ones I got cost me $55 with shipping, which is just as good as when you order from AliExpress. You can always find coupons, I found them on youtube for the ones I got. There are other sources for the same thing, for instance https://www.carledlogo.com/led-door-...0aAs3QEALw_wcB

Do you remove the originals or do they just stick on top?

The originals are removed with a plastic trim removal tool.

Thanks for the info. Mine are still working fine. This one you pointed above sounds like a great replacement if the ones I have short out and no longer can be fixed with a new battery. I am wondering if they need to be better sealed with some water proof tape. When I got mine that was my concern. I did nothing at the time except to try to make sure the rubber seal was tight, but wonder if that is something I can try.
Cheers.

After my first one died I opened it up to find corrosion. It was the driver's side, the passenger was still OK, that door is seldom opened, so there was far less opportunity to get water on it. I swapped them, and when I did I sealed up the good one as best I could. It lasted another four years, but when I opened it up the other day it had corroded inside as well.

In that four years I only drove about 8k miles. Accessories should last longer than an oil change interval.

Yeah that's true hopefully mine will last a year at least. That will give me a chance to get a new set with a different logo and light scheme.

My oem ones done the same as Billfitz. In the UK climate water ingress is always an issue but my car only does 4k tops a year so the majority of the water was from washing the car. For the cost they are sh1t quality.
