UK Insurance Market Turmoil
With my insurance renewal due in February & reading some of the articles on here I wasn't looking forward to my renewal letter (2019 430i M Sport Coupe). Being 64, retired Solicitor, no points since 1985, a no fault claim in 1997 & less than 5k miles a year how can the AA justify a jump from £421 to £698. I thought that was bad but an online quote from Direct Line was £959!!! Still worth shopping around though as the Money Supermarket site included quotes from RAC: RAC Standard £383 & RAC Plus £400. Could have gone with "Geoffrey Essentials" or "Carole Nash" for £40 less but I always prefer to "Big" named insurer.

My renewal came through last week, it’s gone from £460 with a specialist insurer (due to stage 1 remap) to £1500, apparently the policy I’ve had for the last year is no longer available. Car is booked in next week to have remap removed and put back to standard before current policy expires. New policy price for standard car with a different insurer is now £420 fully comp with protected NCB. It’s a shame I’m having to get the remap removed but it’s just not worth the extra hassle and expense!!

Now given up on the remap plans, and will just have to stay with my boring vanilla car. |

Have you tried Adrian Flux? They reward drivers for modifying their cars with lower premiums. At least they did when I registered my car with them in 2022

Everyone i have spoken to recently has reported massive hike in premiums , boys Fiesta is due in March - was £500 so lets see.
Mine , with Admiral, for the modded 440i + Cayenne was around £850 FC so fully expected to be shafted to the max when mine is due in June so have ordered a couple of jars of Vaseline in advance. Just lucky that we are not being not overcharged for our utilities / food shop / fuel and we are getting proportionate wage rises . Getting beyond a joke now. K |

On a slight positive. Just generated a quote from BMW Flex Insurance. Coming at about £1k (you pay monthly subscription). Seems better value.
Interestingly, they accept that any optional extras from purchase do not count as modifications. I’m with Admiral and they count “adaptive suspensions” as lowered suspension mod along with winter wheels! Maybe I’m just too honest disclosing these!!!!! |

2014 320i M Sport F30 w xdrive. I'm the only owner and I've done 64k miles in it. Clean licence, never claimed on car insurance my whole life and now firmly middle aged. Usually my renewal quotes are not too bad. Around £350-£420 kind of mark. I'll be getting one in the next couple of weeks and being honest am a bit worried about what's going to land in the inbox. We will see. I've always been firmly of the opinion car insurance is legalised theft in this country. Went to visit my friend in New Zealand some years back where it's not a legal requirement. Suffice to say renewal quotes over there are very cheap with companies desperate for good business.

Something has to give this year, surely. Mine went from 950 to 1920 in Dec. I will be gutted to lose my 340i and "downgrade" but at 49 (with a clean licence) am simply not prepared to pay this sort of money for insurance long term, even in London.

At least that's something. And keep in mind the 30 days to renewal/best value rule - purportedly you get rinsed even harder if you leave to the last minute.

Looks like prices are still crazy. We're seriously considering changing my wife's XC90 for a slightly newer X5.
For context the Volvo was circa £830 last year (up from £600'ish the year before). X5 is coming in at circa £2k. Good shout above about BMW Flex insurance. Hadn't come across this before. We always pay annually / up front, but their monthly charge with no interest & reassurance of BMW repairs seems valuable, they've also offered a lower total excess £250 versus the £700+ most of the comparison site operators were quoting for! |
