Yikes, sounds dreadful. My bet is exhaust heat shield touching the driveshaft, not that uncommon on any car, really.

Yeah you'll want to bend it out of the way or better yet, determine why it is loose and take corrective action. I have to imagine it wouldn't be hard to spot something touching the driveshaft if you can get underneath the car. Could be a fastener came loose or something like that. Good luck and let us know what you find.

Had the same issue with my 340i , took it to the dealer while it was still under the 50k miles warranty . They said it was the e brake line rubbing against the drive shaft . They fixed it haven't been an issue since

Almost positive it's the rear parking brake cable. My 2015 does exact same thing. Dealer quote of $799.00to fix. Part (clip) was $11.40 with a BMWCCA price from my dealership parts department. Spoke to a tech on the way out and he said I'll have to drop the rear fuel tank about 3 to 4 inches to get to it. Planning on diy'ing it next week.

My dealership said no on my CPO coverage. Good luck. Depending on the outcome, I'll post a DIY ASAP.

Interesting it's not covered by CPO... this would not be 'wear-n-tear' is it? maybe it is?

Also debating on just using zip ties to fix it. If the plastic is so brittle maybe a ziptie would hold up better.

My 335i is doing this exact same thing, any idea what exactly is it with the parking brake cable? Is it just that a clip broke and the cable is touching something, or does the cable it self need to be replaced?

so there is a plastic retaining clip that holds the rear parking brake lines up and away from the driveshaft. The plastic clips break off the retainer. So i decided to take 2 zipties on each side and tighten up the line closer to the top of the heat shield. I was only able to get one good picture.

A tech friend said CPO just started covering it.

My 2015 320 started doing this a few months before it got totaled. My 428i didn’t do this when I picked it up nearly two months ago but now the sound is creeping up at times.

We need to demand a recall!

Very nice. I already bought the clip and still planning on installing it after this business trip, but if the zip ties solve the problem I'll go that route instead of dropping the tank etc.

Plus i would trust zipties a lot more than the cheesey clips. they also make metal zipties if you want to make sure it will never break again
