3! transfer cases??
I'm at 80,000miles and on the original case. I am buying a spare updated TC just to have. Will have to check the flange for hardness levels on the original vs. the updated one.

Transfer Cases
I can share the invoices for each but every time the car became completely immobile and needed a tow. Each time it happened the car was traveling, once at about 80, once on a city road and another time in a parking lot. The sound was like shaking a pinball machine and the RPM;s wouldn't match the speed. It barely was able to drive onto the truck but would kind of move forward if you could bare the sound it was making. It also wouldn't go into park or reverse but sounded like it was just "spinning" under there. It happened at 54k (they warranteed it because it was so close to the warrranty period (and only 18 months old), again at 90k and again at 120k....
i don't know anything about cars but it's scary to think when it happens again i'm probably into it for $5k |

Can you see if they installed BMW part number 27108643149 for the transfer case?
If not, what part number did they put in? (According to the forums 27108643149 transfer case has been made properly...)

I recommend removing sensitive identification data from those invoices.
They did put the updated transfer case in, the second time. Odd why this car is trashing them. We should do a data collection to see what identifiable trends there are in the data. There should be no reason why the 328d does it and the more torquey 335xi/340xi are not trashing the same exact transfer cases. I have put a new transfer case on order, just to have as a spare... If I have a failure, I may just convert to 2wd, using the shell of the transfer case to build a different transmission mount and make a driveshaft adapter.

Carbon deposits (thanks EGR!) or maybe they have some wear in the mechanism. The flaps were redesigned and made simpler than the old N47 engine, so I am curious what is happening.

Isn't the updated TC part # 27108643149? If so, I see it on both the first and second invoice. But not on the third...unless I missed it.
I'm concerned about this as well. I'm at 57K miles and counting without a single failure so far... |

So I think my transfer case is failing. Not sure about it but when I accelerate in a corner in sport mode like an on ramp to a highway there is hesitation in acceleration like the power is on and off in quick succession.
The best way to get around it is not accelerate on the corner and use ecopro most of the time. Unfortunately I figured this out half way on a 1500 mile road trip so will have to wait till I get back home. |

@rbreding Enabled
Will try the DSc reset. But the problem persists after the car has been turned off and then back on again. Wouldnt the on and off again be the same as the reset? |

He didn't mean a reset, he means disabling the interference by the traction and stability control.
I get temporary reduction of power when accelerating over railroad tracks or on a hard turn, which is 100% due to DSC trying to keep things in check.

A transfer case issue (actually it's an output flange issue, transfer case is not a problem), would tend to be more towards grinding and rpm rising with car not moving anywhere.

That is good to hear... I guess?
When the DSC is active it should be accompanied by lights in the dashboard right? That never seems to happen. Also hoping that the output flange does not leave me stranded. |
