2013 F30 335i eating engine oil

So idk if it's normal or not but this is a 2013 335i which I bought back in March 2018 with only 15,000 miles. I didn't know when the last time it was serviced so I went ahead and did the oil change and brake fluid flush at about 17,xxx miles. After that until now, I have about 29,5xx miles on it and so far I have put 3 quarts of engine oil in it on different occasions (one was this morning). I researched and aware that turbo engines eat oil but THIS MUCH? My 30k is due any day now so I will have the dealer take a look but has anyone else experienced this?

I don't think that level of consumption is normal. Do you know for sure the oil is low? Might be worth getting the oil level sensor checked out.

You're almost at 13k miles since your last oil change?

When I got my f30 in 2015, the interval was 15k -- but BMW has since lowered it to 10k. I would say that's even pushing it. A lot of people here would recommend more frequent changes than 10k, especially if you drive it hard.

I'm not knowledgeable when it comes to the N55 so I can't tell you for sure, but that sounds like a lot of oil to burn through.

I averaged 17k oil changes (per CBS) in the first 50k miles. Since then, I do oil changes at 8k miles. I am now at 80k miles and no issues whatsoever. That shouldn't be cause for OP's issue.

Did you check for leaks? Oil filter housing gasket is notoriously problematic. Even though you have relatively low mileage, the age itself can also cause worn gaskets. I assume it was changed with LL-01 certified oil? Maybe also double check that the drain plug was reinstalled properly and torqued to spec. I believe it's 18 ft-lb. Pull the belly pan off to see if there's any pooling of oil on it. A quart every couple months is a lot, so I'm leaning towards a leak somewhere.

Also, as others mentioned, I'd change the oil more frequently. I think iDrive is programmed for 15k mile intervals on our 2013s. I do mine every 5k or so. Might be overkill, but I do it myself, so $50-60 and about an hour of my time every 5k is worth the peace of mind. Especially since I plan on driving this car to the ground and am hoping to hit at least 150k on the odo.

You've done about 15k in 6 months, which means you drive it quite a lot, about the same as I averaged last year, so while an oil change every 2 months might seem excessive, if you continue averaging the same amount of miles, I would still change it every 3 months or so. Just did mine this afternoon and I'll be sending a sample to Blackstone.

I read that as 3 qts over 12000 miles right? I don't think 1qt/4000 miles is really that bad. I change oil about every 5 k so I don't think I would notice that trend if I did have it.

I usually have to add 1 quart of oil between oil change (I do it when the car tells me to) but that much between oil change seems excessive.

The would check the gasket

You wouldn't notice being over a quart short at every oil change?
1qt per 4K miles, if someone is doing the originally spec'd 15k oil change interval, that's over half your oil capacity gone. Not normal. Even pushed up to 10k miles, that's over a third of your oil disappearing.

I don't measure the volume of oil coming out of the car and I don't think 1 qt low would quite trip a alert would it? My GM cars needed to be like 2 qts lower before they complained.

I had GM's that would burn a quart every 1000 miles. So 1 every 4000 is like great in my eyes.

#1: look for a leak:
-oil filter housing- look under the housing for oil going down the front of the block and into the pulleys
-turbo on drivers side-usually gets on the exhaust and you can smell it
-valve cover gasket on the back of the valve cover. Oil pools in places and goes down the back of the block
-my oil pan cracked on my 335, but the oil pan gaskets are a bit problematic because of the aluminum bolts. When I took mine out, 3 were finger tight

Also, I would never go that many miles between changes. 1 quart in that many miles is not unusual if you are a spirited driver

I think the N55s eat a bit of oil from my experience if driving the car hard and/or a lot of short trips where the car doesn't have the chance to warm up to correct operating temp. Make sure to not beat on the car or go hard into boost until car is warmed up (I'm assuming this is given, but just checking).

I have to throw a quart every couple thousand miles. I noticed it more when I was doing the recommended 7.5-10k mile interval oil changes. Now I change every 5k miles just for preventative maintenance. I am also running a bigger turbo at 400whp/450wtrq + and I don't daily my car so I don't notice it. I'd say an additional quart every 5k miles is about the norm for me - It seems to be the same from completely stock, tuned (FBO, stock turbo) and now PS2 turbo.

I have 99k miles on my 2014 335i N55 and I've had the following done under warranty because I saw some seepage but no real substantial leaks:
- Oil filter housing gasket
- Oil pan gasket

The oil pan gasket is a serious procedure because it involves removing the front subframe.

Otherwise, I've been doing 0w-40 BMW LL01 oil changes every 5k miles. The car does see track time.

The first time experience was getting the warning for oil too low on iDrive dash, after that I just keep 1qt on me and measure every about 3 weeks to make sure it's not low. Maybe it does need a thorough check to see why it's been eating that much oil.

On the freeway definitely but nothing crazy like burnouts or drifts, etc. Just speeding basically

Yes sir, I was following the iDrive, whenever it tells me to, funny how I did synthetic at about 8k on my corolla every time lol but not on bimmer. Maybe it's time I start doing that.

Yeah when it happened first, I was reading online and assumed that's how just bmw's operate but yeah doesn't seem normal.

I'd check for oil leak but I doubt if the bottom engine cover will let any oil leak out? But I will be sure to check other places that you mentioned to see if there is any oil leak.

Also I go to BMW for oil change, don't you think they will notify me of any situation like this or would the mechanic not notice it?

Yes I drive it a lot since it's my only car that I take to work and everywhere else. Maybe I do need to get the oil changed way sooner then.

Yes sir, that's correct. I think changing oil is probably better than adding oil on top of it whenever it goes low right

Thanks man for the step by step, I will check out all these spots and see what's the deal, plus I am taking it to the dealer anyways so I am gonna have them take a thorough look.
