Unichip CarPlay

Has anyone installed this on their F30? It looks as though after you install the device, you long press the #8 shortcut on your stereo and then it switches to CarPlay. From what I can tell, it uses the AUX jack for sound.

The link you posted is for the E90 3 series. Perhaps the F35 version will fit the F30? Seems cheap enough, maybe order a sample for $150??

Are these even available in the US? If available, and if the feature set is right, for those that want CarPlay this looks preferable to the Avin unit. It seems people are having lots of problems with both SW and HW on the Avin.

You hit the nail right on the head and hit both eyes as a bonus; I would not recommend the AVIN unit as-is. One week in and it has frozen up well over a dozen times and now I am stuck in a bootloop waiting for more support. HEAVILY debating just sending it back, ordering this and putting my 8.8" back in until I can order the 10.25" OEM. It's a shame too because when it works, it works WELL and is a treat using any app I desire

I tried working out a wholesale deal with them and they tried to pull a bait and switch on me by changing the price last minute.

There's another vendor I'm going through who offers a much better product with possible android auto suppport and I will have it tested and will report back later on.

Thank you as this is the only true solution IMO. It sure is getting difficult to find a decent product these days

By better, do you mean cheaper wholesale deal? .

Pricing wise between the two vendors are the same but the technical specs from the other vendor are much more promising as the other box supports backup camera reversing input while this one doesn't.

I decided to go with the other company because they're up front and honest about their pricing.

So looking at a Chinese website and ordering directly, it costs 2980 RMB or about $454.57 if you just order one for local delivery for the Unichip Carplay for BMWs.

That's the problem with dealing with these Asian manufacturers, they might be able to create the hardware quite successfully, but fall apart on the software and support side of things. I don't mind spending a few hundred dollars more with a North American based vendor to have the level of support and software development that such a product needs.

That aside, as cool as it is, I still think Carplay is a half baked idea with too many limitations imposed by Apple. Not being able to use Waze is a show stopper for me.

So wait...what exactly is this thing? Is it real CarPlay or just a skin to make it look as such?

Steve, are you planning to resell these units in the US/Can? I'd much rather purchase and get support from you than overseas.

Also, how much info do you have on this regarding details? I'm curious how much (if any) integration there is with standard NBT or NBT-EVO. For example, can you use CarPlay split-screen with an iDrive app? Is it possible, like with the integrated iDrive/CarPlay units, to send routes from Apple Maps to the iDrive Nav? See here for what I'm talking about:

It's a behind-the-dash unit which ties into the video, CAN bus, etc., provides a CarPlay interface, and allows for its use via the iDrive controller.

I'm another interested party here. If it's a solid solution, I would like to buy one for my wife's F46 as she has no nav option. This would allow her to integrate her phone safely and give her navigation.

Thanks for the support! I'm going to have the sample by next week and I will report back. I really want to make sure that this is a solid product before making it available for purchase.

As far as I know, there isn't any integration to the OEM infotainment system as this is a MMI interface that shares the APIX1 display with your 6.5" or 8.8" screen. I will find out more about it once I get the sample in.

I'll have this tested on HU_ENTRY and HU_NBT and will let you guys know.

So far so good. We'll have our first shipment ready by second week of November.

So far, it has been tested on HU_ENTRY running on the 6.5" screen as well as HU_NBT running on the factory 8.8" screen.

I actually downgraded from NBT EVO ID5 to go back to NBT and so far I am liking this more than BMW's wireless CarPlay! The interface is a lot snappier than the one found on ID5 and the response time between the menus are much quicker as it is wired and not wireless.
