I’m trading in my wife’s car on Saturday (today is Sunday). I’m taking her private plate off and putting it on retention.

The dealer said, I don’t need to put new plates on the car, he just needs a new v5 with the new number on it.

I was under the impression that you only have a few days (3?) grace to get new plates. It that correct?
How long does it take to get the v5?
If I do the transfer online on Tuesday, will the timing all work?

I was under the impression that if you do it online you need to put the new plates on immediately.

Did mine few weeks back

1.Remove private plate online and get email confirmation
2.Immediately put original reg plates on
3.Ring Insurers to notify of change as if you drive on private reg insurance is not valid anymore
4.New V5 came through in 3 to 5 days
5.Trade car with new V5

I've traded in with the old retained physical plates still on. Trusted the dealer to sort and they did.
