No 6MT in G20 M340i, so tempted to look at an F30

I currently have a 2016 328i 6MT on lease and was planning on logically going into a G20 340i 6MT but since the info (so far) is that the G20 won't offer a 6MT that's a deal breaker for me. I started thinking to myself what does a fully equipped F30 340i 6MT really lack for me? The answer is "not much" aside from some of the latest tech features which I'm mostly ambivalent about. I'm hoping to now snag a white over black fully loaded F30 340i 6MT this time next year and also hit right when the end of production incentives are the best.

Anyone else thinking the same thing after the news of the automatic only G20 broke?

Do check out the ZF 8AT, F30 + that 8AT is a brilliant combo that makes many hardcore bimmer MT drivers happy.

I've actually driven the ZF 8AT a few times in loaner 330i vehicles and it is impressive, but I just prefer the engagement of the 3 pedal option vs gaining a couple fractions of a second in acceleration runs.

You've got to be dam good to only loose a couple fractions of a second vs a ZF. That said I was thinking about switching to a M340 manual myself, looks like BMW just saved me a ton of money by only offering the automatic. I'll keep what I've got now and do some suspension upgrades instead.

Is this actually confirmed?

If so, looks like I'll be buying my car at end of lease. Not giving up the 3rd pedal, just too much fun to drive no matter how good the 8AT is.

I was disappointed in the same way you were with the no MT news, looks like if any upgrade is made, it's going to be an F80.

Same with mine.. The 6mt wasn't a must but when I learned they made them in a 6mt that's the one I wanted so that's the one I got!

It's only a matter of time, when even Formula 1 cars use paddles with what's essentially an automatic, an 8 speed at that.

I know. I have another 24 months on my lease, so timing should work well. I will not be giving up a manual transmission though. Just too much fun.

I say get the F30 and throw a tune on it. You won't regret it. The B58 has lots of potential and lots of aftermarket support. The g20 is essentially the same engine with a more aggressive tune. The new x3 has this engine but with more power and torque than the mppsk and matches the x drive 0-60 in an SAV, imagine that tune in an f30!

I love driving a manual but in my commute it's starting to wear on me in the Bay Area. I am thinking that in 5 years I'll be either getting an Auto M3 or Auto M340i

Judging by what we're hearing from our Bavarian overlords, the transmission decision will be made by them

Maybe it won't be 3k to opt for a transmission that shifts itself on the new M3. But then again I'm sure they will throw an extra 3k in the price anyway

The decision will be made by the bean counters. When demand for MTs drops to the point that there's no longer a profit to be made producing them they'll get dropped... or when the switch to all electric drive eliminates transmissions entirely, whichever comes first.

Exactly my point, "bean counters"= Bavarian overlords.

I thought the X3 M40i is rated at 355HP by BMW which is the same number they give for my B58 MPPSK? In any case total agreement with the potential of the B58, if anyone cracks the DME it's going to be tough to beat.

Maybe it's the 5 series, but it sounded like on the Scott bmw Smith review of the x3 m40i that it was making more
