EGR recall for the 2nd time
Had my EGR recall 12 months ago as many of us did, took the car in, they checked it and said it was fine.
This morning Sytners have just called me to say that they are issuing a second recall to change the EGR value and cooler on all cars to avoid issues in the future. Anyone else had this happen? They said they have all the parts etc in stock so I'm booked in for Feb 21st Last edited by James-335dx; 02-04-2020 at 08:25 AM.. |

Yes, mine was in this week for the same
As with yours - initial recall to check said it was all fine, but they are now replacing all those that passed that check anyway |

My 330D wasn’t part of the initial recall but then I had a coolant issue and took it in, and they ended up saying the EGR cooler needed replacing.
I think they are just doing them all to cover their backs |

ah that explains it.
i had the dreaded egr cooler failure on 2013 f15 x5 and this was replaced a year ago. had booked mine for service for 2nd feb and had a phone call to ask if they could do an egr check again and i told them it had been replaced snd they said it may not need replacement but will be checked etc. |

Thanks all. Sounds like they're replacing the lot then to cover themselves from any future issues. Costly process for some unfortunate suppliers insurer.
Next question then, will they do a software update and will I lose all my coding & map?

So I have my 2015 (15 plate LCI) 330d booked in with Vines of Guildford for a full service (dropping it off this Monday afternoon), and I just called them regarding this EGR work and they said it's not part of it.
Not sure if that will change once the technicians get their hands on it. I'll update if it does in a few days. |

BMW have screwed this whole issue up from my perspective, and damaged my trust in the brand. A key part of the recall was to inspect with an endoscope and see if there had been a coolant leak or build up of carbon deposits. While this inspection should have highlighted an imminent fire risk, the fact that they required an endoscope check gave me very little confidence that my car would still be safe 5k, 10k or 20k miles later when a leak may have developed. I asked them to replace the part irrespective of its condition on that day, and they refused.
Sure enough, about 5k miles after my recall showed no call for concern, my coolant level began dropping, which was picked up by chance when the winter wheels were going on. BMW quarantined the car, and gave me a replacement while the new cooler was ordered. They should have just replaced all of the coolers during the first recall, or as soon as they had an adequate supply of the parts. |

Then I started getting coolant low level warnings, and reduced drivetrain warnings. Car felt rougher than before, not as smooth. They subsequently replaced the EGR in December, car back to normal. Get the impression that the previous EGR check was "computer says no". D.

My car had an original recall inspection and sent on my way same day with the 'nothing else to be done' last year, that was Vines in Crawley.
Vines Guildford contacted me as well last week saying the EGR? was to be replaced. I queried that it had been inspected as part of the recall and I had been told all was well, and was told there had been a change of stance on the issue. |

Ohh here we go again!!
Both mine and the Mrs cars (2016 N57 and 2013 N47) missed the cut last time. Despite needing both cars in "for a full day" after a service, they didn't even check them with an endoscope - they just checked the serial number. If it fell outside a range so it was 'ok'. Why they couldn't spend 15 seconds doing this while the oil was draining the week prior i have no idea, absolute idiots. Please could everyone post their Model and Year so we can try to correlate who is affected? |

Same as above, they told me they just checked the cooler number against a list of known faulty ones and sent me on my way. To be fair I've not had any issues with mine at all but I guess that doesn't mean I won't in the future.
Mines an April 2014 335d with 55k miles. I have to say it's never missed a beat in all the time I've had it but she's well looked after

F15 X5 2013
had endoscope check October 18 at dealer A was told light misting noted no cracks safe to drive part on back order 1100 miles and Dec 20 2018 car stalls won't start. Towed to dealer A who takes 3 days to run a diagnostic (too busy) Call from service advisor saying your car is out of warranty and the egr cooler is cracked so you pay ££££ and we fix!! would take weeks to fix and no courtesy car!! In laws (they own a range rover and an evoque which are frequently in for issues like monthly! my x5 was 5 years no issues bar this egr problem) were due to come in 2 days for xmas and if they knew about the above carry on i would become a laughing stock.) So I went mental. Completely mental. At dealer and at BMW for letting its faithful son down. I could not believe what was happening. Result. in 24hrs car is fixed and free of charge. I have forgotten that and have since bought another bmw 335d and still have that x5 no issues. but the F15 X5 is going for a major service and MoT on 3/2/20 and ive been told my egr will be inspected again. Here we go again.... |

Yes, I had a very similar thing.
Car was inspected and the EGR was cleaned. I asked for it to be replaced but was told that wouldn't be happening. Around a year later I took the car back to the dealer because of exhaust fumes on the cabin and engine bay. EGR corrugated pipe had a hairline split and the entire EHR was replaced. Although it was eventually FOC under the recall (the dealer tried to make out that I'd 'used up' my right to a replacement under the recall) the extra visit to the dealer was a ball ache. My car was a bona fide recall vehicle, and the EGR should have been replaced during the first visit.

If that changes I'll update but so far, nothing. Edit: Quick note of appreciation to Vines of Guildford for carrying out a good service. Highly recommended. Last edited by embay34; 01-28-2020 at 02:35 PM.. |

F31 330D xDrive - 2015 September build. Got replaced at 48k and was sluggish but now singing like a dream at 51k miles. Started with coolant loss and then they noticed a small amount of build up in the EGR cooler pipes and they didn't take any chances. They took my car and gave me a replacement for the weekend as they couldn't get the part in over the weekend, all done FOC but when I asked about the coolant loss they originally quote a £97 inspection fee but they was waved. Took mine to Sytner High Wycombe. |
