2018 F30 BMW 330e Aux Battery Replacement - USA

Hello,

I wanted to share this post in hopes to help other F30 330e owners in USA replacing their auxiliary battery. Not sure why, but I cannot have my battery shipped into USA or into my state. I have searched for 3 whole days to find a replacement, and all available ones are from Europe.

This will help with replacing the Aux battery part numbers:

61 21 7 567 385, 61217567385

61 21 7 593 089, 61217593089

61 21 7 635 788, 61217635788

Replacement battery, only sold at advance auto parts:
https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/...xev/50001096-P
DieHard EV Battery Part # H3-XEV, Group Size H3, 420 CCA, 60 RC, 40 Ah

Battery has exact dimensions with same 420 CCA but slightly lower Ah compared to OE specs
**PRO TIP: DO NOT ENTER IN YOUR VEHICLE INFORMATION, IT WILL AUTOMATICALLY DIRECT YOU TO THE MAIN BATTERY LOCATED IN THE TRUNK (OR ANY OTHER VEHICLES YOU HAVE IN STORE).**

I am currently having a drivetrain message popping up that reads, Drivetrain: Continued driving possible. However, on numerous sites and bimmerpost, I should start with the starter battery. I hope this is all I need to resolve my issue as I went to the local auto store to have my electrical system checked and told me my battery is weak (not sure which one). Wish me luck!

How did this go? Did it clear your issues? Did you have to register the DieHard? I'm having the same issues and the BMW battery is backordered with no ETA.

I don't know if you can get hold of a Varta battery in the US. But if you can, this is an alternative that will work

Hi! Sorry, i dont get notifications for from this site.. It cleared my issues and i did not have to code anything. The only time you need to register/code is for the big battery in the trunk. Or so ive been reading...

Video i watched once before i purchased or did anything.

Ive attemped multiple times from different websites. However, they were all in europe and they cannot ship to Texas and possibly majority of the other states. But you can try them anyways, they'll let you know right away.

What about Registration?

How did it go, guys?

I am located in the UK and fortunately able to buy this battery (which I saw someone else replaced it with this and was okay)

B36 Varta Blue Dynamic Car Battery 12V 44Ah (544401042) (002L 202)
https://www.tayna.co.uk/car-batteries/varta/b36/

I have a question though in relation to the battery registration.

Does changing Auxiliary Battery require to register it? I saw other users do register the new one on Youtube, for auxiliary battery.

Can I use BimmerLink to register it? All other examples I found on the internet are only registering their AGM battery or the main battery. I am not quite sure if Auxiliary battery can be registered using BimmerLink.

I do not have a windows laptop, therefore I cannot use ISTA to register batteries.

Im not too sure . I did not register my aux battery. It is to my knowledge that only the battery in the trunk needs to be reset/registered.

It has been a while and battery still running great. In the US, battery has a warranty of 3 years.

Hope this helps. manhoo

Unhappy

I'm facing a Drivetrain Malfunction with these two codes:

21A511: Starting system, pinion starter: timeout
21A50A: Starting system, pinion starter: timeout occurred several times in succession

Looking in this and other forums it may be the auxiliary battery needs replacing. My 2016 330e still has the stock one, so makes sense it needs to be replaced. I'm trying to figure out if I need to register it or not...

On ISTA+ I've looked at the starter motor wiring diagram and both 12V batteries (G1=trunk main, G6=auxiliary battery next to the motor) seem to have an Intelligent Battery Sensor but only one Charging Controller (N10=CC for auxiliary battery) and the Register Battery option doesn't let you pick which one to register [SEE starter-motor.jpg]. Does this mean that N10 will apply the same over-time adjustment when charging both batteries? Notice that both connections going to G1 and G6 are labelled N10*1B (N10*1B connection seems to be a single connector) [SEE n10-1b.png]
.

Thumbs up

UPDATE:

Can confirm that the Auxiliary Battery NEEDS CODING. ISTA+ has the option (Register Auxiliary battery, can't believe I didn't see the option before...) although it doesn't save the mileage or the specs of the battery. After swapping the OEM 40AH 12V battery for a Bosch S4000 (44AH), registering it on ISTA+ and doing a fault clear, all error messages are gone. One of the messages (21A50A) remained until I drove for a few miles, I guess that one clears after it doesn't detect the other (21A511) for a while.

Thank you for the update! It's been about a year now since my swap and no issues this far from NOT reseting the aux battery. I looked at a few places and it always mentioned that i didn't need to reset it. This is definitely the first.

I know! I was reading through threads on this forum and others and there was no consensus. I'm not sure exactly what kind of adjustment the IBS will do since you can't specify the specs of the battery but at least now we know

As far as I know the battery control is just trying to extend the battery life by adapting the charging process to the age of the battery. So it will work but your battery will be aged a bit quicker than without registering.
