Nevermind - went to Bimmerhaus and got a legit gallon of BMW blue for $27. Now just wondering if I need to actually run the engine with the cap off for a while to remove any air bubbles like it suggests...or is that just for when you flush the system completely...

I just spoke with a service manager from my local BMW dealership and he said both are reservoirs. The large one is for the engine cooling system and the small one is for the turbo cooling system.

Also, it was an orange warning symbol which indicated it wasn't something that needed immediate attention, but if you're getting a red warning, then it's best to fill it immediately I believe. |

And the answer is...
Yes, both tanks are reservoirs, engine and turbo.
Took 20 minutes for the dealer (drive in at lunch to out the door), engine hot, to fill using pressure system. The question is... I have 12,000 miles in 5 months (long story, I hope this slows down, but such a nice car to do that in). Should I be concerned about this coolant depletion? |

Not sure why people are saying one is for the turbo.
Larger tank is for the engine, smaller tank is for the water to air inter-cooler.

All the engine specs I've read say that there are two separate cooling systems. One is mechanically driven and cools the engine block and head. The other is electrically driven. The specs also say that both the air-to-water I/C and the turbo are cooled by electrically driven systems. It only makes sense then, that they are on the same system and cooled from the same reservoir. |

The secondary tank is low temp. If you added the turbo to this loop, you would heat up the coolant and I'm turn heat soak the engine.

Thanks for the coolant flush procedure. But this PDF makes no mention of flushing the coolant that services the intercooler. It must be an additional procedure because they're separate systems. Can you post anything from ISTA about this? Thanks in advance.

getting the low coolant warning means you are very, very low on coolant.
the low tick inside the reservoir is about 250ML missing. the light only comes on after over 3L is missing check your coolant levels people! and make sure to do so when the engine is cold for an accurate reading! |

Below minimum level in main tank after 6000 miles. Should I just top off or get it checked?
Intercooler loop is still at max.

Since I've had my 340i I have noticed a slight smell of coolant under the engine if I've been pushing it hard. I've kept a close eye and have topped it off twice - although only very small amounts when it has dropped just below the min mark.
The fact it seems common gives some comfort, but surely it shouldn't be using any? Does anyone have an explanation direct from bmw? |

checked mine this morning. Found some white precipitations around the cap of main tank. Coolant level is a bit below min. Suspect a faulty cap that leads to evaporation.
checked secondary coolant tank, no precipitation marks observed but coolant level is a bit under min too. Car has 10000km on it. |

Same issue with a f30 330 purchased in Argentina ( enginee B48 ). Coolant level below minimum level at both thanks. Dealer answer went from small tank is for the "oil turbo" and second dealer it was for the brakes fluid!!!!!
Third one was more accurate: same liquid as for the big cap but ( coolant ) ......donīt know what for!!!!! Thanks to this thread I understodd why there are two caps.!!!!! |

I recently had add coolant message took it in to BMW and they said it was bubbling up when they was going to top it up.
Ended up having an airlock so they vaccumed it out and refilled it. They were willing to top it up free of charge.. (not sure because the car was still under warranty or they're friendly) |

Hello,
Newbie here. First time BMW owner. The car is awesome and I plan to keep this car for a long time. A couple of weeks ago, I bought a used 2016 340i. Flew in to Arizona and drove it back home to California. On the way home, the a/c stopped working; I can hear the fans spinning but there's no air flow out of the vents. The next day, the a/c came back. I did some searching here and found that a faulty evaporator sensor could cause the coils to freeze up and a/c to malfunction. Or low coolant in the smaller reservoir can cause the a/c to malfunction. So, I checked the coolant reservoirs and found the small reservoir is low on coolant. Also, the coolant in the small reservoir is a brownish/yellow color but the coolant in the larger reservoir is dark green. I've decided to flush out the coolants. Does anyone have a DIY on how to do this? Coolant capacities? I've done coolant flushes on other cars but I've never flushed an air-to-water intercooler before. Any tips or advice is appreciated. Thanks. [IMG][/IMG] |
