DIY: F30 Surround view retrofit

NOTE: Like any DIY project, proceed at your own risk. I am not responsible for anything that happens to your vehicle as a result of attempting this retrofit. This information is simply posted as a reference to help others who may wish to do this project on their own.

Surround view retrofit requires rear PDC and reversing camera to be pre-installed. I didn't have the reversing camera pre-installed so that was my first step. Control unit must be installed in the original location (not in the trunk).

I think the reversing camera retrofit is described pretty well in the other DIY so I will not focus on it.

Part list:

Common parts:
  • 66539302258 Surround view control unit
  • 61119281258 Surround view HSD
  • 66539232797 Bracket, control unit (Not needed if rear view camera is already installed)
  • ------------- Control unit wiring harness (Power, CAN, FBAS) (Not needed if rear view camera is already installed)
  • 07149158182 Fillister head screw with collar (Not needed if rear view camera is already installed)

Rear view camera retrofit:
  • 66539240351 Backup Camera
  • 51247368753 Trunk/Handle mount for camera
  • 61119309154 Part of the HSD harness

Side view retrofit:
  • 07149166316 Fillister head screw x 4
  • 61319252913 Switch (Not universal)
  • 51117324343 Bumper repair kit (camera holders)
  • 83192317925 Adhesive set K6 (optional)
  • 66539240352 Camera x 2

Top view retrofit:
  • 61129259992 Door wiring harness right (Not universal)
  • 61129259975 Door wiring harness left (Not universal)
  • 51167345706 Mirror Right (Not universal)
  • 51167345705 Mirror Left (Not universal)

Misc:
  • Butyl rope (optional)
  • Cable ties
  • Adhesive cloth tape
  • 18mm drill

I hope I didn't forget anything.

Please note that some parts are vehicle dependent.

HSD wiring harness (61119281258)

61119281258 contains 5 HSD cables and CAN wires:
  1. Left Side-view HSD cable
  2. Right Side-view HSD cable
  3. Part of the left Top view HSD cable. From the control unit to the connector marked on the image below. Additional HSD cable in the left door is required. That's why I had to buy 61129259975.
  4. Part of the right Top view HSD cable. From the control unit to the connector marked on the image below. Additional HSD cable in the right door is required. That's why I had to buy 61129259992.
  5. Part of the reversing camera HSD cable. Reversing camera HSD contains 2 parts. Fist part (61119309154) goes from the camera in the trunk to the right back seat. The second cable goes from the right back seat to the control unit (included in 61119281258).

Retrofit price:
I wasn't in a hurry to do the retrofit, so I was waiting for good eBay deals to buy the parts.
Some parts (read HSD cables) were impossible to buy on eBay.
The total cost for the whole retrofit (including reversing camera) was ~1300€.

Installation steps:

Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery!!!

Install Rheingold. Get familiar with it. This will save you a lot of trouble.
Also, detailed installation instructions can be found there.

Top view:
  • Remove the door trim. There is a youtube video from BAVSOUND where is explained how to remove the door trim, it's really helpful.
  • Remove the sound insulation:
  • Replace left and right door wiring harness.
  • Replace left and right side view mirrors.
  • Remove trim panel for pedal mechanism.
  • Remove instrument panel trim, bottom right.
  • Route the cable from the control unit to the door connector.
  • The easiest way to route the cables from the driver's to the passenger's side is shown on the image below:
  • The same way is routed cable for the right Side-view camera.
  • Rheingold says that refitting sound insulation requires additional butyl rope to be applied. I skipped that part because the existing butyl sealed perfectly.

The tricky part was how to connect the right top view cable to the right door connector. I'm referring to the connector below:

There was no enough room for my hand to plug the HSD connector to the dedicated location in the door connector.
I could remove FEM and other parts from the lower right A pillar but I didn't want to do that.
I've used two female jumper wires to lead the HSD cable:

First, I've removed plastic housing from the female pins of the jumper wires.
Then I run them from the outside of the connector through the dedicated HSD hole to the cabin interior.
When I got those 2 female jumper wires inside the cabin I've connected it to the HSD pins and slowly and carefully pulled it out.
Note that you need to hear "click" when the HSD connector is properly connected to the door connector.

Side view:
  • Remove front bumper (DIY can be found on the forum)
  • Use K6 Adhesive set to fasten the camera holders. (Optional)
  • Drill the firewall on the left and the right side (Carefully!!).
  • Route the side-view cables. More details can be found in Rheingold (Installing repair cable for left Side View camera)
  • Install center console switch

As I stated before, Rheingold provides detailed information about all retrofit steps mentioned in the DIY.

Coding:
VO code your car: Add 5DL (and 3AG if you are retrofitting the reversing camera as well).

Enjoy

so jealous... I want to do this retrofit so bad....

On the exact location of the TRSV unit, i can't for the life of me figure out where it goes in the original location. Any chance you took a photo of that or can post a relevant doc?

Unfortunately I didn't take a photo of the TRSV ECU.

I've used the images below to figure out how to fit the ECU.

So what all pieces did you have to take off to get to that? More than just the one piece that holds the OBDII port?

Hey hrvojehk,

Hoping you can shed some light on how your wired up the center console switch.

This is the install instructions i followed:
Centre Console <-> ICM
PIN1 GN/GE(Green/Yellow) wire <-> PIN28
PIN2 GE/BL(Yellow/Blue) <---------> PIN6 should already be connected
PIN3 <-------------------------------> PIN13 should already be connected

The top button (traction control) & Sport/Comfort/Eco Mode button still work just fine, the switch lights up at night, however neither the camera buttons work. I don't have surround view yet, just the rear camera. I bought this switch so i wouldn't have to swap it out... Did you install any other wires for this switch?

I was also reading this thread over again... I never coded TRSVC even though everything is working except for this console switch. In fact, i found it to be a little odd my TRSVC didn't have an active folder or yellow CAFD that I could code. I didn't think much more about it b/c everything (except the center console switch) appears to be working so not sure how it could be working until i code the TRSVC.

I recently added the OEM trailer hitch in our X3 & I since i added this new module, I did the whole Detect CAF for SWE for that module to get everything working.. do i need to do this for TRSVC? Just wondering why any of this is working without that step being done???

My car has front PDC factory fitted, so I only had to replace the console switch.

Did you try to check with Rheingold if it shows some errors?

Very solid write up hrvojehk! This kind of makes me want to revisit tackling this project.

In researching just a little bit, I don't see why the replacement of the door wiring or the entire mirrors is needed. The HSD wire for inside the door(from mirror to connector) is part #(still searching). This would be all that is needed and would save from having to replace the entire door harness.

As for the mirror, the bottom piece of the mirror which has the mounting point for the camera runs about $24 USD each, depending on if you have the high gloss shadow line or not. The bigger issue here is that there appears to be a small HSD wire that goes from the camera to the mirror connector inside the housing.

EDIT: hrvojehk is correct. In looking at pictures for the part numbers, part #61129281712 is actually the cable that goes inside the mirror housing(see picture here.) So I am still searching now for the cable that runs inside the door from the mirror to the connector. The only reason I am trying to find this is that in the U.S. it seems very difficult to track down replacement wiring harnesses for the entire door...

Just as a quick thought, when you coded the car for the rear view camera did you make sure to apply the coding to the ICM module?

The bigger issue here is that there appears to be a small HSD wire that goes from the camera to the mirror connector inside the housing. In searching around, I was able to find a small 14" HSD wire for inside the mirrors on the X5 with a part # of 61119244256. If hrvojehk or someone else who has the Surround View installed can remove their mirror cap and see if there is a sticker with the part # attached, we could search for that part number and then it would just be a matter of ordering the bottom part and the wire instead of spending hundreds to replace the whole mirror.

The new mirrors are not mandatory for the retrofit, but I found used mirrors pretty cheap, so I dediced not to bother with modifying the existing ones. Also, I can sell the old mirrors and get some money back.

Regarding the part #61129281712, I don't think it's a full HSD wire. I think it connects camera to the mirror connector inside the housing. Actually, I'm pretty sure about that.

I think the control unit is universal.

The label on the control unit says what is HW and SW version of the unit. Most of F30 control units will have the same HW revision (10.02.00) but the different SW version. The ETK number is different because of the SW version.

According to the Realoem, the mirrors are not the same.

For example, my left LHD mirror has part number #51167345705 and the same mirror for RHD has #51167345707.

Hey Roxxor, i scored this gem off ebay... The problem is, i can't make out the part # of the cable connecting the cable to this harness

There appears to be a number, written over the number. I can try to pull back that black wrap to see i can find that number again somewhere else on the cable

I've started purchasing the parts off ebay to tackle this one too. I have 3 of the 4 cameras, need another top view camera

Guys,

Just checked BMW ETK, BMW on-line parts catalog. Here's some part numbers that may be of use:

Mirror, Lower housing section, Shadow line, left 51167284133
Mirror, Lower housing section, Shadow line, right 51167284134
Mirror Lower housing section, grained, left 51167284131
Mirror Lower housing section, grained, right 51167284132

Both sets are for surround view cameras and show prices around 15-25 Euros

Only show one item one for left & right, I assume, but part numbers are same:
HSD line, exterior mirror 61129281712

Hope that helps

i'm not so sure you would even need to those bottom mirror pieces... i popped off my mirror cover yesterday so i could get a look down there & here is what i saw...

Here is the mirror part off ECS

I don't know what those extra pieces on the side are but the camera points down & i already have holes for those screws. i'm gonna pick up 4 of those screws to make sure what i have is grooved for screws. I can just use a step bit to drill out for the camera... I know the part is only $15 x 2 but i'm not sure we needed it.
