Sticky/Notchy/Lumpy steering on Hwy
Hey guys!
I have a 2012 F30 335i RHD in Australia. So wondering if anyone has had this issue. Only seems to happen above 80kph when I'm on the highway and driving in a straight-line. Even wierder it seems to only happen if I've been over 80 for more than 15-20 minutes. If I pull over it goes away again for a while. What I can feel is a small lump in the steering if I'm applying small 1-2 degree corrections to stay straight. No issues if applying more lock for changing lanes or following the corners. It just feels like there is lump in the wheel, almost like when you overpower the auto steering assistance in new cars. Also occurs in eco, comfort, sport and sport plus modes. No lump around town or when the car is stopped. Feels perfectly fine. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated |

Yeah, I've noticed this on mine as well. I assumed it had something to do with the variable steering ratio. It is definitely weird that it only manifests itself after several minutes at highway speed.

Same experience here. I went back to the dealer but it's almost impossible to reproduce 'on demand'. Their explanation after listening to my experience was that after xx miles on the highway the steering wheel will be less responsive around the center to provide a better experience - little corrections are filtered away sort of speak.
I find this highly annoying because it feels like the steering sticks and you have to push it further then you'd like to overcome this, but no fix unfortunately. |

Just noticed this phenomenon in my 2018 F30 340xi I just bought a few days ago. Feels like the steering almost "goes dead" for a split second, it's really disconcerting at first... I do have the track handling package with the dynamic/variable steering. It's there whether the car is in sport or comfort, too.

There seem to updates on steering racks for some models, just contacted the dealer about it and they will be in touch.
Also, BMW ''efficiency Dynamics'' does - as far as my knowledge goes - indeed shut down the electric steering to save power. as it also charges the battery on off-throttle and stuff. |
