I know it's been asked a million times....
....but I need a quick answer initially on this.
My main dealer has totally screwed me over (will explain later), and I need to change my front discs. I refuse to pay BMW prices and I know 3rd party products can be much better. What's the best option for an F31, 320d (non-M Sport brakes)? I also plan to fit them myself. I've done it dozens of times on a motorcycle and my mountain bike so how hard can it be?! The fluid doesn't need bleeding or replacing and I have all the tools. I need to order replacements right away hence the urgency....

I recommend the following brands if you just need them replaced and that's it
Rotors: Zimmerman, ATE, Brembo, Stoptech Pads: Pagid, Jurid, Textar, ATE, Brembo, Stoptech, Hawk

Thank you. My choices are Zimmerman or Brembo. Which of the two would be most recommended? I've read mixed reviews about warping and all sort of things, but since that happened to me with my OEM BMW discs, I figure is this relevant? It could happen with any premium brand?

You can get some pretty good prices on rotors from ECS Tuning. I just ordered some OEM BMW Genuine rotors from them for around $180-200 I believe. D+S will run you for $400-$600 (OEM) all around. I also just installed some Brembo rear brake pads I ordered from Autozone for $70. No issues yet.

since you're located in spain try ebcfrenos.es
I've tracked the hell out of some GDs (slotted and dimpled) on my 325i e36 track car and I've never had them warp or develop cracks. They are due for replacement now but that's after 18 trackdays and using reasonably aggressive pads. I also used them in my ex-DD ford Focus and they lasted close to 60.000 miles. Never had them warp and that car was abused to the max on a daily basis, never had a set of tires last more than 12k miles (and that's rotating a couple of times over those 12k) and most sets lasted between 6000 and 9000 miles, and I was lucky to get more than 15-20k out of a complete set of brake pads. YMMV, but i've always been quite happy with EBC products save for the original Red Ceramic pads. Those were absolute junk. EDIT: BTW given that you also need pads, I'd give the YellowStuff a shot. I think they're the best dust/cold bite/fade resistance compromise out there. |

If you upgrade the fronts and leave the rears standard you WILL notice a difference when you upgrade the rears after a while. The car will seem more planted under heavy braking and the tail wont tend to rise as much. |
