F31 330d 10/2012 loud hissing on medium load
Hi F30post
I've recently bought a 10/2012 150k miles F31 330d (that's what I could afford... Long live the danish car tax). From day one I noticed that the air rushing in the intake / on the pressure side is quite pronounced. On light load, it's not audible, and on full load, it's not present either - but on medium load, it's quite apparent. To an extent, where it's intrusive in the cabin. I've shot a couple of videos of this: I've tried pinpointing exactly where the sound is coming from, but it's really hard with such a high pitch noise. Moving about the different hoses on the intake side makes no difference in sound - pressure hoses I can't really reach. No obvious signs of "oil speepage" except a very small amount (which seems dried out) around there the crankcase ventilation hose meets the intake pipe. Is it normal for the 330ds to make this much intake noise? I'm aware how a turbo engine sounds with a bit of turbo whistle, but this seems excessive, even compared to my old 260k miles e91 330d (231 hp). If it's of any concern, the videos are recorded in Comfort mode. Doesn't sound like the sound is exaggerated in sport or sport+. Last edited by drhousedk; 05-23-2018 at 05:37 AM.. Hello drhousedk,
you're not alone, I have the same issue with my car. I noticed it after about 9 months of owning mine. and it got progressively worse and now sounds exactly the same as yours. I have replaced both intercooler pipes and even had my turbo rebuilt trying to get to the bottom of it. firstly, I think the sound your video showed with your bonnet up and window open is normal - that's just the sound of the turbo. I believe the sound you are hearing inside the car is different, and I believe it is coming from the airbox (if its the same as mine) I have loosened the jubilee clips around the turbo that connect the plastic inlet pipe from the MAF/air filter to test, and it doesn't get rid of it, but it sounds quieter. the noise is apparent between 1500rpm and 3000rpm. after that its fine. Its most noticeable when its under load, even light throttle but up hills its apparent. When I changed my air filter last - it made a difference - but only for a short while. I guess as soon as the filter starts to build up dust it starts to make that noise. My thoughts anyway. |

I've had this issue on my F30 330d. As time went on it got louder and more apparent. Only yesterday I had the charge pipe replaced to no avail.
From chatting to others on here it seems as though this noise shouldn't be there, others say it's a characteristic of the turbo/engine. It could be the wastegate releasing excess pressure but I've had several turbo cars before this and none of them had this noise. It sounds like there's a leak somewhere, a leak that is very hard to pin point. My next step will be to get the car on a dyno and go through the gears with someone looking into the engine bay to see where exactly the noise is coming from. If it's a thing that it is the wastegate, a remap should quieten it due to holding in more of this excess pressure. What's worrying is that another user here had this noise but it's now gone and his opinion of what cured it isn't working for me. BMW dealerships tend to throw out the "it's a characteristic of the engine" line but I'm not so sure. I would love nothing more than to get to the bottom of this as I want to get mine remapped and what use is a remap if there's a boost leak? Ken - I'm somewhat relieved to see at this point in time that a turbo rebuild hasn't cured it for you as I was thinking about going down this costly route. EDIT: It's a pity the US don't get this engine as I would nearly guarantee they would have solved it by now Last edited by MetzgerMeister; 07-25-2018 at 05:11 AM.. |

To see if it's a boost leak, use a smoke machine to smoke the intake tract to find it. That is the best diagnostic test.

I will ask the dealership to do this but given that I live in Ireland, this wouldn't really be something that would be as readily available as in the US.

You can always get an OBDII bluetooth adapter and phone logging app to see if your boost is meeting/not meeting your targeted boost. If you're not reaching it, then you know there's a leak.

These make 8+ hour jobs into simple 20 minute jobs. They run off car 12V source, and use plain mineral oil ('baby oil'). These diag tools are gold.

I can't hear it when revving the car only when doing a pull in 2-3-4 gear and only between 2-3.5k rpm. |

Hi all, I found this on the web then tracked it down on the app. Before I go into detail, are people still reading this post?
I have an F10 with the EXACT same sound. |

my 330d does the same thing, most noticeable in Sport mode and squeezing the throttle rather than flooring it.
