Hi all. Was wondering if my IATs are too high. Ambient temp for these runs was 58 Fahrenheit. I also have some knock during WOT.

Guess my questions are:
-Should I get a new intercooler? I've noticed my IATs are generally 20-30 over ambient when cruising. I've heard people say 10-20 is ideal so not sure if it's a big deal.
-Is this just likely an octane issue? I run 91 octane tune with 93 generally, but I put in 92 (a local gas station chain switched recently. Idk why) and was wondering if maybe that would cause this?

Car/mods: 2014 335i EWG. Bms intercooler, cts Catless dp, afe drop in dry filter for stock airbox, ngk spark plugs gapped to .022 (.020 I can't remember).

Cheers & thanks in advance.

As to the IATs, your IC does seem to not be up to the task. Getting IAT rise just during a 4th gear pull shouldn't really be happening with a good IC and 16 psi. and 58F with IATs going up to almost 98 means you are 40F over ambient... thats a ton. I get down to 5F within ambient on the highway and it takes me a few gears to start getting IAT rise and that's just with VRSF 5'' stepped, but my CP is heat wrapped so that lets me get even closer to ambient at cruise.

Having said that you knock/timing appears to be a separate issue since IATs in the 80s by themselves shouldnt really be giving you bad timing and several knocks. You can run your tank down and try a new station with 93 and see if it improve, try adding some E85, or try some boostane to confirm its a octane issue. You also definitely dont need those plugs with a small gap, but usually that doesnt hurt timing, although 0.020 is way too small for your mods and tune.

Thank you for confirming. Looks like a new intercooler is next up on the list. Will probably just go with vrsf 5" and get a few other goodies while I'm at it. Will run it to empty and get 93 back in. Hopefully that solves the knock and timing issue.

Don't get the VRSF 5''. You might as well pay 40$ more for the next size up and future proof your car. In hindsight i would have done that, its much better value and will ensure you are getting a significant upgrade.

If you are looking at any other upgrades MST v2 inlet is good.

Good point I think I'll do that. I planned on doing fuel pump when Black Friday sales come around and a big turbo next year (hopefully a pure 800 if that comes out)

I was actually looking into a ftp boost pipe, turbo smart plumb back bov, and a cts turbo inlet. I also looked into mst but like cts and saw that the measurements added up. Think this would be good to go with?

Ah yeah CTS is the new one that seemed to copy MST. If dimensions are the same and design is the same its probably just as good but no personal experience with it and have not seen any reviews yet. Other mods seem fine.

Everything is ordered. I'll provide some measurements for the cts inlet as well as some before and after logs. Hopefully this will keep the car cool, and maybe I can recoup some money from my bms intercooler

Yep, I went with the biggest one. It's heavy (40 lbs!!), but not a chance of heat soak on this puppy. IAT's less than 20F over ambient after continuous hard pulls.
(as a matter of fact, it actually cools down while I am pulling hard and air is flowing. Only heats up a tiny bit when I let off. )

Bootmod3 Stage 2 93 AGG Tune. Plugs gapped at 0.26. No issues.

You went with the RACE? AWESOME- How is the drivability? And do you have any logs to share?

OP for stage 2, the Competition 6.5" should be enough.

Yeah I got the 6.5 ordered so that should be good and future proof my car. Got xhp stage 3 as well which is pretty nice. Still need to break the car in with it so I haven't driven hard but comfort shifts feel seamless, and sport plus shifts seem quicker/more aggressive.

Once all the new mods are on I can throw logs up if you would all want. I'll be logging regardless

Your IATs are fine. What gas are you using? Personally I run Shell V-power in east coast because it's 99RON.

In logs include each cylinder knock indicator to know what cylinder is knocking. Maybe spark coils?

I was using a 92 octane gas at this time on 91 octane tune. I normally run 93

Same question. How are you saying his IATs are fine? They are 40F over ambient temp. That is in no way fine. He's only getting away with it now because it was <60F ambient temps.

Also, coils are almost never responisble for knock...

All 'm saying is log WOT with all cylinder knock log to see if it's 1 certain cylinder causing problems. Log 2 shows 2 knocks. The cheapest thing to replace is spark plugs and spark coils. If it something else, maybe the guys on the forum know better, that's all the advise i can give.

This guy clearly had a IAT issue. Throwing parts at the car isnt going to change anything, especially coils.

What could be a cause for his IAT issues?

The intercooler. Upgraded to a VRSF race and it solved the IAT issue

According to his write up, he has a BMS intercooler and his signature says VRSF Race IC so I assume had it at one point. I'm just curious why his temps are not dropping when doing a pull. He is getting target boost so no leak. Could it be a bad/fake intercooler?
