Engine Rebuild shop recommendations N55
Hey guys
unfortunately, looks like my rod bearings are toast. I'm looking for recommendations for an engine rebuilding company for the N55 motor. Thank you in advance |

Most quality independent BMW mechanics can do the job.
You can use the bimmershops website to find good local BMW indies. How do you know rod bearings are shot? Whats the history of the car? |

I'd also like to know how rod bearings were determined to be the issue.

The car has a clear rod knock and metal shavings in the oil filter and oil. Also was looked at by a BMW tech. |

It might be cheaper to do a remove and replace with a long block from a donor car. You can find them at Car-part.com.
Also consider, you don't need a built motor to run 450whp, which is about the streetable limit to RWD anyways.

mangos_irina, what's the build date of your vehicle? Some earlier N55 engines (in 2013 vehicles) experienced premature connecting rod bearing wear and BMW is aware of this issue.

Yea the BMW tech told me about this. This is a 2015 and not that high in miles so I was surprised the rod bearings went.

here's my experience :
2013 335i xdrive 100k miles, got it inspected by bmw before to buy, it was knocking at high rpm apparently then got the whole engine replaced (they decided not the turbo ) by bmw, anyway for a super well maintained car I was very surprised as well... it remains a mystery Wat version of the engine they put in tho.. Im hoping it's a version with the problems addressed. they added a 2 year warranty on the engine. good luck! |

Been through the same thing man car-part was my source as well for getting a donor motor got it from a place called Benzeen Auto Parts had it shipped out with no problem and a year warranty on the motor now got a big boost kit on it been running it since with no issues. My advice would get a donor motor and while its out what ever shop you decide to work on your car have them replace all gaskets as well as rod bearings as this is what I did wish you all the best!

I agree with what has been written, rebuilding an N55 with a bad rod bearing is dicey at best (damaged crank). I would go with the warrantied used engine and refresh it with new gaskets and rod bearings.

Was any maintenance done on old engine before rod bearings let go? Like oil filter housing gasket by chance? These engines let go because of oil starvation or poor maintenance.

The BMW mechanic that changed the engine did say that the rod bearings for this engine come from different facilities and his going theory is that some are faultier than others since he has seen a couple rod knocks come through but no way to know what you have unless you take them out to see where they were made. |

Ended up buying a new engine from BMW. A lot of used engines are junk these days. If someone has a working engine, why would they sell it with the car market the way it is? |

Damn man that sucks. A lot of these things just boil down to luck. I'll probably end up selling it in the coming months just to get rid of it anyways.
