BMW 340i power
Today a friend with a diesel vw golf gtd 184 Bhp kept up to my 340i until around 60mph. I was assuming that I would have walked away easily. I checked the torque figures and the gtd has 380nm and 340i has 450nm. Is this why he kept up?

gt tdi does 0-60 in about a smudge over 7 seconds, 340i is down near 4 seconds if an auto or 5 if manual so he shouldn't really be keeping to you, at 60mph id expect the 2 seconds to be a decent gap.
Faster speeds this will become more apparent |

It's not all about power. It's power to weight ratio. I bet his GTI is a lot lighter than your 340.
And if he's a smaller guy than you, that is less weight, he has less fuel, etc. Numbers on paper are just numbers. |

To be honest it was damp, therefore I believe traction control kicked in slightly as i believe the car was in sport not sports plus. Also the car is showing 320ish bhp on the idrive so car must be running fine.

This just reminds me of my coworker than said technically his V6 challenger was faster than an SRT, because he raced one and it spun off the line. Doesn't really mean anything in the grand scheme of things because of that one scenario. It's just annoying that soccer moms in their 4x4 crossovers think that keeping up with you to 60 means something when they try racing you greenlight to greenlight.

Golf R is like civic type r maybe slower. It is at best 0-60 in mid 5-6 second range vs 4.8 for stock 2WD or 4.6 xdrive or 4.6 mppsk and 4.4 mppsk x drive. Should be no contest. Use sport plus to eliminate lag. Try launch control though ymmv.

I like haven’t read the comments but if it hasn’t been mentioned. I would say tires would make a big role and also any additional weight (people, luggage, fuel)

In everything other than snow covered roads, RWD tends to put the power down better than FWD
Asking the rear tyres to put all the power down to early/hard will never work, and having a lower powered car will help if you lack the skill to moderate the power to the grip thats available Do it in the bone dry again and i bet the results will be different! |

Keep in mind the DME might be doing torque limiting due to traction, IAT, etc as well. I've had days lately that 1st has some major torque reductions. Not sure if it's traction or what, but pulling the shifter into 2nd lightens the front end and tosses you back in the seat. You would pretty much need to do some logging at the same time since the nannies could be at work behind the scene. |

My thoughts as well. I had an 89 SHO with ecu upgrade and opened up exhaust ...talk about torque steer sleeper. lol
