How were you able to add CarPlay? I have a 2017 F30 with NBT-EVO idrive-5, build date Nov-2016. I don't have wireless charging, but coded it (changed 6NH to 6NW) - as BMW Genius told me in an email that I had to have wireless charging and not just 609 with idrive-5 (which may not be true). I was hoping to add CarPlay through the ConnectedDrive store but BMW Genius mentioned the above as the reason it is not available for me. Any suggestions?

CarPlay is actually built into the head unit's firmware but is only activated when it is ConnectedDrive provisioned to your vehicle's VIN.

Our retrofitted head units have CarPlay and BMW Apps activated at the head unit level so it's kind of like jail breaking your iPhone so I would not recommend doing this on a factory installed setup as this will cause warranty implications if BMW ever needs to work on your infotainment system.

On this retrofitted setup, you can easily restore to factory by putting your original head unit back in for warranty/lease return so there are no service issues.

Thanks for the quick reply. I guess I'm SOL for carplay (for now) since it doesn't seem that BMW will provide the ConnectedDrive purchase option.

Thanks.

If your vehicle is a early July - August 2016 production, I'm afraid so

I have had customers who had September 2016 productions who were able to get it post activated through BMW.

I never rely on BMW "Genius" for actual information.

As long as you have 609 Pro Nav with ID5 software (Nov '16 or later), you can also purchase FSC set to activate 6CP Carplay.

Not sure how it will work at the dealer but every time we flash and update the head units with those custom FSCs, it will cancel them and we'll have to reload it using the USB script.

There's no way to put your original factory issued FSC codes back in as you can't clear SWT with tool32 on ID5 like on a ID4 NBT.

FSC are tied to individual head unit and can be re-loaded the same way they were originally if erased at dealership.

As long you explain that to the SA so that they don't get alarmed when the Navigation is greyed out after the software update, I don't see a problem then.

I'm not going to risk it so I'm putting my original head unit back in if my car is either recalled or needs an ECU replacement.

My car is 2017 with a Nov-2016 build date. How do I check the date of my idrive software? And should I VO code 6CP?

Connect to the car and go to VCM tab and under I-step. Click read.

VO coding 6CP won't make any difference as you either need an FSC or Provisioning.

F020-16-07-506... Does this mean I need to go to the dealer for an update? Car is a NOV-2016 build but firmware is July?

Yes, you would need and want update. Nov '16 is minimum required, but there are improvements in functionality with Feb & April release.

Hey everyone!

A few weeks ago I reached out to Steve at Bimmercoders to volunteer and be a guinea pig, so to speak, for this ID5 retrofit. Since my 2016 F30 is equipped with a few additional options such as Parking Assistant and Harman Kardon radio, I seemed like a good candidate to test if this ID4 to ID5 would be feasible.

I'm pleased to report that this retrofit works flawlessly!

All of my original options still function as intended and my car has not thrown any error codes.

I went into this project with zero knowledge on how to swap out the head unit. If it wasn't for short slack on the quad plug connector in the rear of the head unit, this retrofit could've been completed in less than 15 minutes. Literally, the only tools required are a T20 torx bit, a plastic trim spreader, and 10 mm socket/wrench for disconnecting the battery.

I'll upload some pictures of the swap and new interface later tonight.

If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask!

I have one more available (Head Unit only) and this will be coded to work with your existing ID4 screen and controller at a discount.

If anyone is interested, please let me know.

Your vehicle must have the following

- US spec 2016 2, 3 or 4 series with pre-existing NBT EVO Navigation system (M2, M3 and M4 are ok as well)
- Harman Kardon Sound System (Hi-Fi is ok too but you will need to increase the volume on your settings for optimal sound)

Actually if you flash the head unit to 61.4, you will get the CarPlay shortcut tab back.
