Mods to stock air intake

I want the sound from an aftermarket intake without the price tag.
Basicly intakes gives you 0hp so why spend 500$ for them.

I took a look at the OEM intake and the silencer is inside the tube that goes from the airbox to the turbo inlet.

It may be possible to modify this tube or find a replacement tube without the silencer inside ?

If we can come to a solution for less than 100$ with an aftermarket drop in filter it could be a really good alternative and it will look OEM

Like how people modded the stock intake on the e90s .

You remember they made a silicone tube to replace the factory one on the e90 ?

Most probably wont venture into this as you can get a slightly used one for around 150-to 250 shipped from the classifieds if you don't want to spend for new. I got mine for 225 shipped from a member and it was never opened. Just got to look.

But one way you can do it is by getting a Silicone J pipe and cutting at the right location or getting an aluminum J pipe and doing the same thing. Than just use silicone Couplers to clamp and you should be good to go.

The intake resonator is inside this intake tube. If someone can make the same tube without the resonator we should get an injen like sound and everything will look OEM

This is exactly what I was looking into doing. Did you happen to find a solution?

3D scan that part, design a CAD replacement to fit OEM dimensions, manufacture in china=profit???!?!?

Theoretically I have the tools to do that, but is it worth it? Doubt it. It'll end up costing as much as a full intake setup from the other vendors.

Thats the turbo inlet pipe that they make. A good mod but different than what is being discussed here.

Turner Motorsports makes a replacement pipe like the one pictured above, without the baffles.

Hello, wondering if this was ever completed.
There's two pipes available. The intake system consists of two pipes. Turbo inlet pipe to air box pipe. Air box pipe to the air box itself.

Turner Motorsport sells this.

https://www.turnermotorsport.com/p-5...rbo-inlet-n20/

That pipe gets rid of the turbo baffling inside the air intake system. The remaining is cutting/burring out the plastic ridges inside the air box itself.

so you are saying a resonator costs substantial gain on stock oem intake? i thought resonator is just a noise insulator, nothing more...

It's sound + throttle response. Same thing the cold air intakes do for the car. It's minor but 1-4th the cost of an intake for the throttle response and a somewhat roar from the air box.

how can a resonator cause a lag in throttle response? i am sorry, but i don't understand. do you have any data to back it up? or just butt dyno?

like a gun silencer, does a gun silencer make a gun less deadly? a bullet is a bullet, it will hurt or kill with or without gun silencer.

air is just air, the only thing i can think of that cause a lag in throttle response is if the diameter of the OEM silencer pipe is smaller than the turner straight pipe, therefore less air volume, but i don't have measurement of both pipes, so i can't claim.

the sound, yes, i understand, that's what a resonator does, to silence any noise, but claiming a lag in throttle response due to a resonator is a bit far

The resonator inside the intake pipe looks like a cheese grater, it's not just random ripples in the side of the pipe.

Longer video (14:20), but provides a good explanation about the effect of resonators and Helmholtz chambers. As described, it's not a simple baffle that directly restricts airflow:
