2018 F36 420i - 'check engine' light but no fault codes
Hi,
on Sunday the amber 'check engine' light lit up solid (not flashing) and has stayed lit. I did some checks, and: - there was no message in the dash display - 'Check Control' shows 'no faults' - No trouble codes stored in the DTC hidden menu - Engine running fine, full performance - Oil level shows 75% full - Gas cap was secure - Service is due in 1,300 miles but was not getting the 'book service now' message Anyone have any ideas what the CEL could be caused by? I've booked the service anyway and mentioned the CEL. Thanks for any pointers. |

To be clear, after doing a full oil level measurement, the display showed the level was three-quarters of the way to the 'max' mark. I thought it was only 1 litre from the 'min' to the 'max' mark on the display?

Even if you're down one liter that's about a half liter more than I'd be comfortable with. You should check the engine thoroughly for leaks. BMW engines don't burn oil, but they're notorious for leaking gaskets, especially on the oil filter housing and valve cover.

Are you able to check the codes with ISTA?

A quick follow-up to conclude this thread. 5 days after it popped up, the CEL disappeared and did not reappear. Still no fault codes stored.
The car has just had its first service, and during the inspection they found an emissions irregularity. Oxygen sensors were good, but an endoscope inspection in the exhaust showed the catalytic converter matrix had partially broken up internally. There was no external damage or impact to the cat can. Being replaced under warranty. |

Mine just did this the other day once I hit 66,666 miles. Checked all the same things. Disappeared now so I guess I will schedule an apt for tomorrow to have them check it out. I was thinking something emissions.
