Getting Started with JB4

Hey guys, new here. I just got a 2016 320i and this is the first turbocharged car I have owned. I love it so far, but after coming from the G35 and 350z world, it just lacks that bit of power I am used to.

I really don't know much about turbos aside from what they do on a basic mechanical level, so I don't know anything about modding a turbo car.

I have been looking for a definitive answer on a question I have about JB4: Do I need to install any other mods if I use a JB4? If I do, what stages/mappings require supporting mods? Will a stock 320i have issues running, let's say, JB4 stage 2 map 5?

From this question you will probably tell how little I know about turbo mods!

I may just start with the simple JB+...

You can definitely run a JB4 without any additional mods. Though I cannot speak on which maps to use as I do not own one. The JB+ however, I have been running in my 328i for a little over a year without any issue. It provides great performance for the price, giving you about 25hp at $200 brand new. If you dont mind buying used, check the member classifieds here. You can pretty regularly find a JB+ for around $100 or a JB4 for around $250. Good luck! Let us know what you end up doing.

Map 5 is the specific map for a stock 320i, I used to run it back when I used jb4.

Go with BM3 or JB4. We gain about 40-45hp with it at Stage 1. Stage 2 needs an Intercooler and Catless DP. Stage 1 is like 220-230hp and Stage 2 brings us close to 270-280. I think the 328i Stage 1 goes to about 270-280 and Stage 2 caps right around 300.

Hey! I know you're only talking about JB4, but did you already buy one? If not, why not consider Bootmod3? Bootmod3 is safer as it is a flash tune and it also makes the 320i much faster and better to drive! I'm speaking from experience. I was in your boat, asking your questions before. I ultimately went with bootmod3 just a few months back, and I love it more than anything haha. I know it doesn't answer your question, but just wanted to say my piece to a potential buyer!

Thanks for the info! I think one of my issues right now is that I still have warranty for the next 70k miles lol. From what I understand, the JB4 is untraceable if you take it out. Any issues on warranty with Bootmod3?

I also still have warranty on my car. It's not traceable. In fact, it's easier to remove bootmod3 from your car than a piggyback. You just unflash the car and close the DME either through your computer or through the app. It's as if it never even happened haha. With a piggy back, you gotta go through the hassle of physically removing the device. With a flash tune like bootmod3, you literally just unflash it haha. It's untraceable

It actually doesn't matter if you use BM3 or JB4. If the engineer wants to dig deeper, they'll be able to see the car logging modified non-OEM tables and parameters. So there's always a risk that if you have something motor related, they'll dig deep enough to find if you made any changes that could have caused it.

Correct, it is all traceable to some extent. If you are in for an oil change it is unlikely anyone cares, if you throw a rod and BMW needs to replace your engine under warranty they may take a harder look.

If you are concerned with warranty, I would simply do a dinantronics sport or jb+ until it expires. These little boxes offer a big slice of a full stage 1 tune and are cheap and also super easy to take in and out.

I think current best solution is MG Flasher. 290hp/420nm with Stage 1 and 5.15sec 0-100km/h. Amazing!

So I've seen a lot of threads with varying opinions on whether or not BMW can detect a JB4/JB+/Dinan Sport Tuner. Like other have said, I guess anything is traceable to some extent. What is the likelihood that BMW can detect any of these piggybacks? Does the Dinan Sport Tuner spoof numbers to the ECU or is that just the JB products?

As you said anything can be traceable but the likely hood is close to zero with tens of thousands of tuned cars are getting warranty work done without any issues.
