Valvetronic issues
Hi
We have a 335 N55 which keeps throwing valvetronic faults. We have replaced (in sequence, not all at the same time), valvetronic motor, then valvetronic eccentric shaft with bearings and caps and oil supply pipe, and then also valve cover as pcv valve was leaking. The whole car has been reprogrammed also. I run through the valvetronic run in phases and it passes and completes without issue. As soon as I road test the car I end up broken down with drive train fault again and have too wait a few minutes with ignition off until I can move the vehicle again. I'm at a bit of a loss now as there isn't much else to the valve tronic system. I have removed and visually inspected the wiring harness between the valvetronic motor and dme as it's a separate cable and all looms fine. I have attached the fault codes. I would appreciate any thoughts on this matter and any other test ideas to resolve the issue. Regards Mark |

No problem, I appreciate your input.
I just like a theory behind the prognosis. We did find teeth chipped on the eccentric shaft so our repairs are all justified but you can imagine a customers point of view |

I know when I did a valve cover gasket on my 11 328ix I kept getting a valvtronic issue with mine, mine ended up being related to vanos units, replaced them all was good, and I cleaned the return vanos units on the side of the engine block which most dont know are there. After all of that I have had no issues.

Yes lol! just realized that yes solenoids not units but you know what I'm talking about. I had scanned my car many times with Foxwell NT510 and it was constantly having valvetronic codes, also I would have slight hesitation in the idle, I thought maybe when I put it back together I didnt install the valvetronic solenoid and code it correctly, but from all the research I could find was leading me to the VANOS solenoids. I bought a new pair and problem solved.

I was getting VANOS faults and car would go into limp mode within a mile or 2 if driving. Mechanic replaced the VANOS tensioner first. Seemed fine for a day or 2 but the problem came back. Mechanic then replaced the VANOS solenoids. Problem has gone away and no further issues for 6 months.
I was getting these codes: 13e201-suspected VANOS fault 204081- suspected VANOS fault Hope this helps |

Hi
All opinions help, but I am not getting Vanos faults. It is valve tronic. I honestly dont see why a Vanos physical fault would trigger a valvetronic fault code. That said, I have replaced pretty much all the valvetronic system. I still haven't got a new ICM but I have logged the voltage at the valvetronic motor which is always ok. |

I am not a mechanic. I am not educated enough to know if there is any relationship or not between valvetronic system and VANOS system. I saw above post about VANOS and added my experience.
My mechanic replaced the VANOS solenoids. The 2 for intake and exhaust cams located at the front of the engine just behind the intake pipe. |

I had this exact problem. It’s your valvetronic actuator that needs replacing. It was a $160 part I believe, and you had to take off the valvecover gasket, gain access by winding back the camshaft by hand, and then unmounting and installing the new valvetronic actuator. Complete cost of repair was about $200 for a new vc gasket, intake manifold gasket, and of course a new valvetronic actuator. Also, you’ll need the special “bmw lube” (I forgot the exact name), to apply to the camshaft after the reinstall.

The actuator/servomotor/position sensor and servomotor in one is usually the cause although I've seen this fault being cured with a replacement valvetronic harness (it is available separate to the engine harness).
As the previous poster mentioned, it is beneath the valve cover and requires an assistant to move the eccentric shaft (not camshaft) back and forth to its end stops to allow you to remove components to gain access. The part itself must be a lot cheaper in the US? |
