i5 m60

I was behind one today for a bit and a couple of things came to me. Firstly with the rear led lights on it doesn't look too bad but not as nice as current lci 5 series imo.

However if you are vaguely close to it you are struck be the sheer size of it, it looked absolutely massive. Now that might be the design and that it was a dark colour but certainly looks chunky if not actually wider than the g series.

The sheer size is bothering me. I wanted to want a new 5, and although I haven't seen one in the flesh yet, I suspect to allow space for the battery, it will have grown far too much.

The battery goes at the bottom so in theory, as Tesla have shown, you should be able to get a more space efficient car with no bigger footprint. I think if its got bigger its because they want it to be bigger - it seems the belief is that bigger is better and as the 3 series gets bigger and better, the 5 has to go even bigger to have its own space.

I thought the G20 (well F90 in my case) was too big already!

I sat in an i5 while waiting at the dealer recently. I think is was a 40 but they had gone a bit wild with the options. The spec was very similar to my car - Tanzanite, Ivory merino, B&W sound. It felt well made and the (upgraded) seats felt great, better than my car. Definitely a nice place to be. The list was about 90k though, which seemed high.

No you are correct it is absolutely massive and the interior quality, although glitzy, is a bit of a downgrade I’d say from the ones I’ve sat in. Maybe the wheel is nicer but the door cards and lack of leather or pleather is a bit meh.
It’s finally > 5.0m long and this in the ‘not for me ever’ category of car. For that size the boot and the rear weren’t especially spacious either! Then there’s the price, hmmm.

As you might sense I’m not a huge fan just now. LCI and price support would help, and I’m sure it is a very very refined and serene drive.

It is big... compared to the G30 LCi...it's

97mm longer at 5060
36mm taller at 1515
32mm wider at 2156 open mirrors

..and it's 138mm longer than the X5 (G05)

but it's not just the dimensions, the height of the boot and bonnet are massively above the height of the G30.

Autotrader has new i5 40 for 68k. Model 3 LR is 50k. An extra 17k seems like a very reasonable premium.
100k for a 5 series on the other hand even if it's faster is a bit of a leap.

I hadn't realised it had grown so much. That's almost as long as my 8GC (5082mm) which is crazy for a 5 Series.

That was the thing that made it look as big as an x3 or even 5 from the back with the massive boot height.

Had a poke round one today and they look smart but the boot height is still too high.
Light up grille and fake chrystal rotary knob for idrive look awful though.

Speaks the truth.

These will need some deals to shift them.
Worst 5er for quite some time. Oh dear BMW what has happened.

It's about the same size as my car just a tad taller by 25mm and about 40mm smaller in length with the same width, TBH I don't think my car is that big I always see full sized SUVs as massive in comparison even if they are shorter they occupy more space vertically and are wider.

Harry really didn't like it in his review this evening and he's right too much mass, too much money and not enough range.

Interesting part of that was him explaining that 10% of electricity used in the recharging process is lost. Like filling up a petrol car and splashing gallons of fuel, that you’ve paid for, all over the forecourt floor.

Assume this is true of all EV’s, and Harry’s clearly got a bee in his bonnet that it never gets mentioned!

Imagine!
Takes £4.00 to fill up my car. 40p of it was wasted = splashing gallons of petrol on the forecourt
🤔😂

Does the same principal apply to public chargers though? Quite clearly bugger all difference on a home charger with a great tariff, but more relevant if you are paying 60p per KW?

Car still looks pretty grim, both inside and out. A long way from my G31 540

Even at those kind of rates, which I don't think I've ever paid, MY RWD battery is tiny for the car size and range and ability vs that M60.

Say 10kwh arrival as not totally flat and charge to 56kwh (full) it about £26 so yeah, less than £3 in 'losses' = splashing gallon over the forecourt

Back to this pseudo M, its rapid in a line no doubt but there's not much to it for £100k and I dislike that interior the more I see of it.

As ever if you're charging at home on cheap tariff it's no issue, but for those paying some of the fast charger rates up to 85p per KWH then it's not great.

I also think this different pricing model depending on whether you're a "guest" or subscriber that BP are trying on is taking the mickey, they need to stop this nonsense it's just more barriers, you don't get a different price when filling up with petrol or diesel as you're just a customer (remember those? ) This app tastic incessant need to know everything about you is getting out of hand.
