2024 Goals

Evening, 2024 is looming large and reflecting on my last 12 months not everything was smooth sailing.

Weighed myself on 18/01/23 - 108.2kg (@ 6ft 3 tall for reference) marked it up on the calendar and targeted a 12kg weight loss for the year overall.

Well I weighed in this morning at 106.1kg although I do feel I'm carrying some excess water after the festive period this probably isn't far off my true weight, the disappointing thing is that on 15/11/23 I weighed 102.5kg so was on my way to doing fairly well. Not the end of the world and pleased to see it hasn't gone the other way.

I will be taking my weight again on 2nd Jan as a datum for the year and we go again for a 12kg weight loss.

I just wondered what sort of year you guys have had with regard to your goals for 2023, any reflections and what targets you might of set yourself for next year?

I used to read a lot of books. That helped in opening my eyes to things that would be beyond my realm of awareness. That stopped when kids came along and mobiles became a time thief. I have a list of books I have purchased but not read and plan to make a start with this.

Dunno why I was expecting to see some great finishes from Messi and the likes!

Anyway, in the process of a house move going through so hoping it will all go smoothly to fulfill some life long wants, of a sit on John Deer Mower, full size Snooker table and a proper kitted out huge garage and car lift.

Very excited!

Oh and if I can be bothered to stop eating crisps and chocolate - lose a few pounds!

In terms of fitness, had a couple of injuries that I'm still recovering from (dislocated shoulder and sprained ankle when I got knocked off my bike), as such my targets for 2024 are quite modest :

1. First ultramarathon. It's 'only' a 50km (31 miles), but involves 1450m (0.9 miles, to put it in a more painful way) of ascent. That's in October
2. 2000+ miles on the bike
3. Drop some more weight. Currently ranging 88-90kg, Goal one is under 85kg, and would like to get under 80kg by race
4. sub-20 minute 5k. This one is very unlikely, I've not been under 24 minutes in the last decade - but hey, aim for the stars and all that !

wow great goals wish you all the best.

I hit 5k miles on the bike in 2018 at 88kg with an FTP of 320W.. not sure I will ever get back to that but would just be good to be a bit healthier to start with. I am running a flat 5k (ran one tonight in 29:52) if I could get that down to 24 mins next year and shave off 12kg I'd be super happy with that.

Good luck with the ultra marathon you nutter all the best.

To recover from left orchiectomy surgery on 03rd Jan 2024 (3-4 weeks I've been told, probably longer), so no training at all bar from Captains of Crush whilst I'm unable to do anything; won't be able to move much really for at least 2 weeks...

And then back into very light training to begin with, and step it up from there

I'm 125kg currently (6ft 4 and have been 132kg to 140kg every since before I got married in Nov 2010)! I've not been this light for a decade, if not more

But retired from all heavy lifting now, all stones etc - that's me done as it's more than likely all that, that has got me into this health situation unfortunately I was once a 300kg squatter, 340kg deadlifter and 190/200kg bencher... I couldn't squat 100kg now if I tried

I want to keep dropping weight until I'm around the 110-115kg range and I'll be happy with that; I'm not meant to be light. I'm broad and fairly thick set, always have been since my teens and rugby days etc. But being this light currently & even lighter will do me a world of good, I'm nearly 45 and need to think about my/our future health wise etc...

We'll be getting back into walking ASAP too

All the best with it - if there's one piece of exercise that'll help shift weight, it's walking !

Getting a job is 1st!

Shifting the 2st I put back on this year is 2nd!

But in all seriousness I’d be happy to lose a stone and stay like that so it’s easy to maintain!

Similar story here regards the weight loss. Managed to cultivate my mass to 116kg this year, which isn’t ideal for me. Made a concerted effort from the end of August to drop the weight I’d clearly gained and hit 102kg just before our winter holiday but that’s since bounced back to 104kg (see the chart ). I did want to be sub-100kg by 01/01/24 but I’m going to miss that I think and it was always going to be a challenge to lose the weight in the time available. I’m 6’2” and would like to be around 85kg, which is where I got to in 2015/16 but I was cycling 200+ miles a week at that point (mostly commuting). And I’d like to get back into the cycling too.

Beyond the cycling, I really want to pick my guitars up properly and get back on with that. I got quite good in my late-teens and then kind of stopped to get on with uni, forge a career, and never really picked it up seriously again and then had a family so lost the time to devote to it. But I will have to pick between the guitar or the cycling as time is still at a premium, however WFH more than I was 12 months ago will help somewhat.

Not really resolutions as such but certainly what I’d like to work towards in 2024.

Best of luck to you all with your endeavours in the new year.

Very good thread.

Two main goals for me in 2024 -

1. Actually gain some weight - in the form of losing fat and gaining muscle. Aim is to get from 72kg to 75kg.

2. Family member mentioned this but actually just be more grateful - we have a roof over our heads, health, decent cars and houses, a good family…we should just be more appreciative!

Nice one mate wishing you the best with recovery. I used to be really into weightlifting, not so much strongman stuff but general strength training. When I was 21 I was about 94kg had 115kg bench, 225kg dead lift and 165kg squat... It defiantly takes its toll on your body moving weight like that on almost a daily basis. I still lift weights now and I still try to progressively overload but sometimes instead of adding weight now I add reps.

Wish you all the best with dropping the bit of weight you want to, I am slowly learning you cant outwork a bad diet so started to track all my foods on myfitnesspal lately. Still can't avoid the occasional binge at the moment which is something im trying to work out of my lifestyle.

wow that chart tells a story mate. You've got this.... the start is the hardest right we're all going to have hiccups be it holidays or stress with work etc.. main thing is you recognise it and get back on the horse ASAP so as to not lose all your own hard work.

Commuting by bike is an excellent way to get some exercise in especially in the dryer warmer months.

I weighed 104.5kg this morning, lets see who gets to sub 100kg first?

1: End the year 3kg over target (74kg versus 71kg), however my lie to myself is 'its all muscle', my wife did buy me some 32inch trousers in the sale this week and they were very loose so that's another lie I can tell me self. Reality is I need to stop eating cakes!

2: Would like to live in our own home again sometime in 2024, preferably one with a roof, floor, heating, and toilet!

Cheers

Yup; we did a lot of walking, more so locally and then up to The Lakes which are only 45mins for us

But the last 2 years it's been little n often or none at all with the issues I've had and them stopping me from walking etc

All I've done is just cut my food intake in half and kept up training where I could etc...

I think once I've recovered and able to; I'm going to get back into swimming as a non impact way of bettering my cardio as well

Cheers bud. I am going very aggressive with my strategy and running a large daily deficit on calories, which I did once before when I did the insanity programme in 2017. It’s probably not recommended but it works for me to remove temptation and eat a bit better/force better choices.

And since you’ve thrown down the gauntlet, I’ve weighed in at 103.5kg this morning. First to sub-100kg it is!

1. Finally get married (during Covid everything was cancelled and then future Mother in Law has been seriously ill)

2. Run an ultra marathon, a 50k. Have done quite a few half marathon's but never stepped up. It's time to do it. Thinking about the 'Race to the Stones' or something similar in the summer.

A number of 'goals' this year.

1. Spend minimum three months on continental Europe. Already booked for two and a half.
2. Ride motorcycles as much as possible. Three tours already booked.
3. Enjoy life. Most important of all!

Sporting goals. For me all a bout running and Hyrox.

Hoping to break a few PBs so reducing my 5k and 10k and a Solo Hyrox under 1:20 would do nicely. Next year I’m taking on Pro (bigger weights in the stations) so that’s will be ‘nice’ 😂😂

As for most of us, always the weight. I’ve done a reasonable job last 12-18 months heading from 110kg to hovering around 90kg. Really need to be around 85kg to be at race pace.

Good all with the goals.

Woudl be nice to see people chipping back in I’ve the year with progress.

PS Wife is over the moon! I seem to have replaced car shopping with trainers! Loving my new Saucony Kinvara Pros, comfy and a CF semi super show with a not ridiculously unbalanced sole! Into the collection they go 😂😂

Weighed myself at the gym yesterday and there was clearly something wrong with the scales , as they were reading about 20kg too high and they said "one at a time please"

Been concentrating too much upping the weight plates on the machines over the last year and convincing myself that i need an excess of the wrong calories to do so.

I can blame it on job boredom (potentially 12h on my arse per shift) , the weather , the time of year but really the problem is that i am a greedy lazy bastard , cant blame the booze as haven`t had a drop for over a year now.

Goals for this year is get down to 100kg whilst retaining some strength , realistically loosing 2kg a month should be easily achievable.

Now off for a "ruby" before i start.

Good thread!

So for 2024

1. Stop worrying about stuff I cannot control!
2. Since I retired I lack purpose. Need to find it and be more useful. Payback others/society as I have been too selfish, work focused and grumpy for too long
3. Spend more time in the Motorhome on mainland Europe.
4. Maybe learn French.

That’s a fair amount, might have to add it into 2025.

Happy New Year all.

As always you speak a lot of sense.

2023 has been pretty good I think, so I would be happy with more of the same in 2024. I also need to worry less about things I can't control and be grateful I have a nice house, a decent pension pot, a great family and some brilliant friends. I am already giving a bit back by being a school trustee, but I do need to stop worrying about work and try to plan a wind down to retirement.

No new cars in 2024 but I do have a milestone birthday to celebrate...
